The literal invisible cut: mastering the Fluid Mor

      October 5, 2019, 2:16 pm
Ethics aside, editors often have a legitimate need to hide a jump cut. Many editors are still unaware of morphing transitions, while others don’t know what to do when they go wrong. In this week’s Impossible Shot, I work through the process of applying and tweaking morphing transitions (Fluid Morph in Media Composer, Morph Cut in Premiere Pro, Smooth Cut in Resolve, and Flow in FCP X).

The VFX of ‘Ad Astra’: Envisioning the Retro F

      October 5, 2019, 2:16 pm
Forty years ago, Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now transferred Joseph Conrad’s revered 1902 classic Heart of Darkness from colonial Africa to 1970s Vietnam. This year, director James Gray (The Immigrant, The Yards) adapts the tale into a movie titled Ad Astra, a spacefaring drama centered on the strained relationship between a father and son, where the patriarch is feared to have gone mad. Despite journeying to the Moon, Mars and Neptune, the movie was initially not thought to be heavy on visual effects. As Allen Maris (Godzilla), who doubled as a visual effects producer and supervisor, points out, “Everybody went into this thinking that it’s going to be a smaller movie, because James Gray doesn’t usually do visual effects and spectacles.”

You'd assume split diopters and anamorphic lenses are a live-action film thing. Just don't tell that to Pixar.

Delivering in Multiple Aspect Ratios for Social Me

      October 3, 2019, 5:10 pm
As editors, we need to deliver video to be hosted on a variety of social media platforms, often in multiple aspect ratios for each platform. For example, 16:9 for a Facebook feed post, but 9:16 for a Facebook story. Or perhaps 1:1 for Instagram. The number of different aspect ratios is a bit bewildering. Here’s a link to a good article that describes the best aspect ratio to use for various platforms.
