      Earlier this year Sony installed a 16K screen into the front of a cosmetics store in Yokohama, south of Tokyo. The 63ft wide screen (19.2m) screen is believed to be the largest 16K screen yet.

      The Visual Effects Society (VES), the industry’s professional global honorary society, announced the launch of Ask Me Anything: VFX Pros Tell All, a dynamic new initiative created in partnership with Autodesk, worldwide leaders in 3D design, engineering and entertainment software. The yearlong initiative will shine a light on diversity in visual effects with a lineup of talks with successful visual effects professionals from different backgrounds – and a new platform for inspired storytelling.

      On Tuesday we published the first part of our conversation with Ad Astra editors John Axelrad and Lee Haugen. Director James Gray’s film (which he co-wrote with Ethan Gross) is the rare intimate epic. It involves some of the most breathtaking sequences in any film this year, as well as a very personal father/son story in which our hero, Brad Pitt’s astronaut Roy McBride, travels all the way to Neptune to face dear old dad Cliff (Tommy Lee Jones).

      How Ad Astra VFX Team Tackled the Rover Battle

      James Gray (“Lost City of Z”) isn’t accustomed to directing action scenes, but he made sure that his thrilling “Ad Astra” Rover battle on the moon, with astronaut Brad Pitt being pursued and attacked by pirates, was unconventional. “In some weird way, it was shot on location,” Gray said.
