TECH TIPS

Versatile, flexible, innovative, ubiquitous — all of these words are appropriate when describing Adobe After Effects, the robust application that seems to practically do it all. Compositors use it to seamlessly merge layers of green-screen footage, live action back plates and 3D renderings. Visual effects artists utilize it to create intricate special effects such as laser blasts and explosions. Motion graphics artists employ it to create typography and design for television commercials, network promos and broadcast design. There are even those who use it to animate characters and tell stories. It’s also popular with editors who dip into it from time to time for a quick effect, lower third or title design for films and TV shows on which they are working.

TAIL POP
May 24, 2013, 4:29 am
It was March 31, 1981. I was celebrating my second anniversary of becoming a union story analyst by watching the 53rd Academy Awards. The host was Johnny Carson and the field of films was perhaps the strongest it had been in decades. There was The Empire Strikes Back, The Great Santini, Melvin and Howard, Breaker Morant, Brubaker, Fame, Tribute, The Stunt Man, Resurrection and Gloria — and those hadn’t even been nominated. There was also Raging Bull, Tess, The Elephant Man and Coal Miner’s Daughter, which had. And there was Ordinary People, which won. To this day, it remains one of my all-time favorites. But how in the world did first-time director Robert Redford, working for DGA scale, beat out Martin Scorsese, Roman Polanski, David Lynch and Michael Apted?

Romancing a Trilogy
May 23, 2013, 5:05 pm
Arguably a highlight in the career of Sandra Adair, A.C.E., and her 20-year and 16-feature collaboration with Richard Linklater, has been cutting the director’s acclaimed romantic trilogy about soul mates Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy): Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004) and, the latest, Before Midnight, which opens May 24 through Sony Pictures Classics.

When ‘The Hangover’ Strikes Back
May 23, 2013, 5:05 pm
With franchise films becoming increasingly commonplace as studios look to capitalize on past successes and brands, so are recurring creative teams, who stick together through the series. Such has been the case with Debra Neil-Fisher, A.C.E., and her collaborations with director Todd Phillips on The Hangover trilogy, as well as Jay Roach on the Austin Powers films. While Hangover Part II was co-edited with Mike Sale, Part III — which opens May 24 through Warner Bros. — sees the co-editorship of Jeff Groth, who brought to the mix a strong background in documentary, including Bill Maher’s comedic Religulous (2008).
