Lee Smith began his career in the movie industry as a sound designer for internationally respected directors such as Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm), Jane Campion (The Piano), George Miller (Lorenzo’s Oil), and Peter Weir (Green Card). American Cinema Editors (ACE) will honor veteran editors Michael Brown, A.C.E. and Michael Kahn, A.C.E. with the organization’s prestigious Lifetime Career Achievement Award at the 61st Annual ACE Eddie Awards, Feb. 19 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. "Steven was looking for an editor after Jaws," recalls film editor Michael Kahn, as to how his creative partnership started 34 years ago with moviemaker Steven Spielberg. "[Irvin] Kershner and Owen Roizman, the DP, recommended me to Steven. Steven had probably talked to every editor in town by then, but he talked to me. It was a short visit, but it worked out well. He called me and I was on Close Encounters [ of the Third Kind]."
