It started with the bizarre announcement that a team from Apple was taking over the LAFCPUG Supermeet at NAB. Nearly 2000 FCP users gathered to hear what they presumed would be the unveiling of the next version of Final Cut Studio or at least a new Final Cut Pro 8.

It was not hard to predict that a product created almost from scratch would not be met with applause from everybody. If you work with a professional tool you always have your own ways of creating your projects and you get used to and committed to your software. If you worked for years with a specific program it is not always easy to migrate to a completely new environment.

With Final Cut Pro X finally out it might be hard for some of you to work with the new interface and find all the options. Larry Jordan, who needs no introduction, made a step-by-step training on the last version of the suite. It contains 88 movies - more than 11 hours of in-depth tutorials which concentrate on the FCP X workflow and editing.

Yesterday was a monumental day in the eyes of many in post-production. Apple released Final Cut Pro X (as well as Motion 5 and Compressor 4) in the Mac App Store for download. If you've followed any discussion, be it on Twitter, here or in the various blogs, you've probably seen that reaction has been quite mixed and reactors quite vocal (I'm guilty as charged). It does feel like, at least at this early stage, FCPX is a love it or hate tool.

Stereo 3D science was the only thing on the agenda yesterday as SMPTE kicked off its second annual conference on the subject at the Millennium Broadway hotel in New York City. Of course, massive amounts of RandD money have already gone into the art and craft of creating 3D imagery — but the topics of discussion at this event aren't so much what we already know as what we're still working to find out.
