In 2005, Joe Weiss released Soundslides, a killer audio slideshow production program that helped transition many newspaper photojournalists into the world of online multimedia. Audio slideshows soon flooded newspaper websites. Its simple interface and even simpler learning curve proved a perfect match for anyone wanting to add an audio narrative to their online picture stories.

A new product from HighlightCam aims to eliminate all the tedius work from video editing (for the typical consumer of course) through careful use of some smart algorithms. Built for iPhone and iPod Touch, their app allows you to load in your videos, answer a few short questions, and let their Amazon Cloud-driven service create the video you want.

Today’s Quicktip almost seems like a no-brainer but I’m surprised that I still see projects come in the door where items have been numbered in a bin 1, 2, 3—- 10, 11, 12 instead of 01, 02, 03—- 10, 11, 12. Why add the zero? So when you sort the items by name in the bin they are sorted properly.

There are several reasons that footage might need repair. Archival sources (especially those that are tape-based) can wear with time or equipment failure. Rushed crews or poor preproduction can also impact the quality of a shot through inadequate lighting.
