Periodically my husband and I find things pinned to our door by our nieces who live down the hall from us. The objects they pin up range in content from holiday decorations to 10 year old marker drawings, but some of my favourite are from what appears to be a Chuck Norris day to day tear off calendar with meditative Chuck Norris thoughts or concepts. Some of them have migrated to our fridge for the permanent collection. My personal favourite: "Before Chuck Norris was born, there were no rainbows."

Vancouver film editor Julian Clarke has spent much of the last year hunkered down in an editing room in Toronto, working on a new Rachel Weisz film called The Whistleblower. The catch is, it was filmed in Romania. After each day of filming, film cans were sent by Fed-Ex across the Atlantic, where Clarke loaded them into the computer and went to work. I am currently in the "rough cut" phase of my latest show. And this, to me, is the most difficult part. This is where I need to make something out of nothing. Well, not NOTHING, as there is a lot of stuff there that you use. But this is the part of the phase that I need to look at ALL of my somethings, and cull it down and string it out and arrange it in a way to tell a good story.

In this, the first of a five part series, Bill explains the frustration he felt at the linear editing process in a tape-based world and how he, turned this frustration to find a solution to the problem. As a result the world of editing has never been the same. Where once tape-based suites and film cutting rooms dominated, now the electronic non-linear way has become the accepted process.

The San Francisco Film Society announced today that acclaimed film editor and sound designer Walter Murch will deliver the annual State of Cinema Address at the 53rd San Francisco International Film Festival (April 22 - May 6) at the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas Sunday, April 25 at 4:00 pm.
