I’ve always admired those who could do amazing animations in After Effects. I remember back in 2005 watching Creative Cow’s hour long tutorials. They were always complicated and some how I would miss a step and nothing would work. This week, I had to overcome my fear and jumped in the deep end.

You probably all remember the green screen movement that took over twitter last year, right after Rhythm & Hues, the VFX company that pretty much made Life of Pi went on winning an Oscar 11 days after filing for bankruptcy. Everybody was in a bit of a shock: weren’t VFX the thing going on in all blockbusters and top grossing films? (i.e: shouldn’t VFX artist make big bucks?). And how can you win an Oscar and file for bankruptcy the same week?

If we can write out the steps we want the computer to do, then all we have to do is figure out how to translate our steps into something the computer can understand. I break down the Locator Method for creating pole vector constraints and outline how we would want to go about tackling this process through a script.

While this method is a bit more involved than the method shown in Part 2 of this series, it is well worth the time to set it up. I have yet to run into a situation where rotation values were placed on systems I have created. And once the process is scripted out, it really is just a button click to set up.

In this podcast I demonstrate one method for placing the pole vector icon in the correct location. While this is a fairly quick, user-friendly method and works most of the time, it is not a 100% guarantee to keep joints chain rotation free.
