When it comes to creature effects, trends come and go in Hollywood. From latex suits to CGI, at any given time, the silver screen has its favorites. And falls from grace can hurt something awful. Just ask Phil. In the 1960s, he was hot shit. But now, in an era of motion capture, no one wants to hire a stop-motion animated skeleton monster.

The Best Animated Short Film category is not traditionally associated with big issues. That’s often the Best Documentary Short Subject’s area of expertise. And the latter’s Oscar nominees this year mostly follow suit. But the animated short nominees are also very heavy. Not all necessarily confront an issue, but even the ones that aren’t “issue films” still deal with death, illness, and deep family relationships. Similar to last year’s winner, Bao, they can be a punch to the gut and bring you to tears.

The Stateside ASIFA Annie Awards have announced their 2020 winners. Among those awarded were Henry Selick (director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach and Coraline), Ron Clements and John Musker (who have worked as one of Walt Disney Animation Studio’s leading director teams over the past three decades) and, posthumously, Satoshi Kon (acclaimed manga artist and director of such films as Perfect Blue and Paprika), all whom were selected by the ASIFA-Hollywood Board of Directors tp receive Winsor McCay Awards for exemplary industry careers.

The cool thing about animation is that while the elements of a story may feel familiar – perhaps the characters are human, and live in the sort of houses we recognise – the animated format allows us to suspend our disbelief. Things happen in cartoons that wouldn't happen in real life. And largely, as an audience, we'll happily accept that.
