Here at No Film School, we've been talking about Avid's free version of Media Composer for a couple years. First announced in 2015, the trimmed-down version, dubbed Media Composer First, is aimed at "aspiring video professionals, video enthusiasts, and students" as a way to introduce them to the Avid environment. The 10bit 4:2:2 IPB (or in other words Long GOP) 4K and HD files that the Panasonic GH5 produces are notoriously difficult, make that nearly impossible to edit in Premiere Pro CC 2017, causing crashes and severe playback issues. The 8 bit files, at least for me, appeared to be OK in both Full HD and UHD when on a timeline in Premiere. Adobe did say they are working on more full-fledged support for the current Long GOP codec in the GH5, and earlier today they appear to have released a new update for Premiere Pro CC 2017 that appears to fix this.
