In this first of 3 tutorials on Rotoscoping with Mocha for AE, Andrew Devis introduces the tools needed to work quickly and efficiently in Mocha to create shapes and output those shapes to AE. Andrew also discusses when and why at certain points it may be better to use masks in AE rather than shapes from Mocha.

First off, if you haven't seen the documentary "Catfish" you really should rent it. It's a funny look at a quirky love story that developed over Facebook. Because a lot of the communication of that film happens with computer screens, they decided to do something cool to give it texture.

A popular effect that's often requested, VU meters that move in sync with the audio track. Here's a good tutorial showing how that's achieved using the audio and quantize parameter behaviors.

Color Grading Central has posted a series of free training videos for color grading in Final Cut Pro X. The site's founder, Denver Riddle, was inspired to create it when he realized that there wasn't a central location for colorists to talk about and learn their craft. Says Riddle, "MOST Colorists are self taught, so take advantage of whatever learning resources there are that are available and put some mileage on, in the chair and on the control surface."

As we transition from Final Cut Pro to another NLE, I'm running a series of tests to determine which NLE will best suit our needs. One concern is whether any of the workflow that we've developed through the years in Final Cut Pro will translate to another NLE. As in the part 1 of Transitioning, we're looking at Adobe Premiere Pro. Do we have to re-train ourselves completely or develop an entirely new workflow to use Premiere? I take a look at the basic layout of the two applications and some of the basic features used in FCP to see how they translate over.

As we transition from Final Cut Pro to another NLE, I'm running a series of tests to determine which NLE will best suit our needs. Of paramount concern is to ensure that we can still access the 1,000+ Final Cut Pro projects we have on file dating back 10 years of production. We often have to do revisions and updates, particularly for news stories.

The vectorscope is a powerful tool to help users get a graphical representation of the chrominance values of their footage instead of just having to rely on their eyes because - as we all know - our eyes don't always tell us the whole truth when it comes to dealing with color! Because the vectorscope is somewhat hidden in AE, it is sometimes overlooked, so in this tutorial, Andrew Devis shows how to find, set-up and use the vectorscope in AE to look at whole images as well as specific regions of interest.
