Positioning microphones so that they aren’t in your shots while making sure they can capture quality audio can become highly frustrating. And it’s even more frustrating when you don't notice that a microphone got into a shot until post-production. At this point, you must be thinking that the footage is ruined, but Griffin Hammond has a trick that he uses to hide microphones in shots without having to reshoot anything.

As a rule, lavaliers are one of the most commonly used microphones in filmmaking. Attached to a host or discretely hidden behind a corsage, the small form factor and portability of lavaliers have many applications on a film set as these devices are the ones that can get closest to the actor making it less awkward than having someone hover over your head with a shotgun mic.

Timecode Systems is now shipping the UltraSync One, an agnostic product designed for multicamera sync. The SyncBac Pro currently works with Hero 4 Silver and Black but a new version will come out soon to work with future generation of GoPro products.

New features from Nugen at IBC include the Halo Upmix plugin for use within DAWs such as Pro Tools. A new features within the product is ambisonic output for those looking to do VR mixes. Halo Downmix was introduced for those having surround content and but needing a stereo mix.

Ah, audio… Although many would think that good filmmaking is primarily down to the images, the truth is that this is in fact an audiovisual medium – and note that the “audio” comes before the “visual”. You are a lot more likely to forgive footage that’s a little shaky or a little noisy and chalk it up to style. Dodgy audio, though? That’s bound to sitck out like a sore thumb.
