Last week, film editing heavyweight Avid released their iPad app, Avid Studio, taking on Apple's own iMovie app head on. I used iMovie last year for a family wedding video where I shot on my iPhone, edited on iPad and premiered for the family during the wedding dinner, blog post here. It was a real hit too, as being able to present a fully edited wedding video just a couple of hours after the event was kind of like magic.

The world is full of experts and knowledge stuffed minds that can sometimes lead one astray on the path to completing video productions. Convoluted methods, agonisingly painful conversions, renders, encodes - and the production is still locked inside a program in a computer and not out in front of the eyes of the audience

I’ve just received a copy of Avid Media Composer 5.0 – it’s a bit like Christmas! I’ve had a chance to try some of the big new features – AMA linking to RAW RED media and Canon DSLR clips, but it’s going to take me a while to dig right into the new features – I may even have to read the manual!

When Action 3D Productions hired an editor to cut the concert film Phish 3D, it made sense that they’d go to Don Wilson's Americana Media. Wilson is an Emmy-winning producer-director-editor whose experience in the industry stretches back to the early days of MTV, when he was cutting promo clips for any number of top-tier acts.

"This is not Media Composer," says Avid senior product designer Frank Capria. "I could be anywhere. All the media you’re going to see is in Tewksbury. You just clone it." The Avid system is so quick and looks so much like Media Composer that Capria has to explain to the audience that the video he’s editing is actually being edited thousands of miles away and streaming back.
