After mocking Final Cut X, Conan editors tease CS6

    March 18, 2012, 3:50 pm
When Apple first showed off Final Cut Pro X last summer, the jeers came quickly from the editing industry. The lack of multi-cam support and frustrating options for importing and exporting XML files were just two of the woes that editors faced if they upgraded. But not everyone reacted so angrily to the new version.

The Social Media at NAB : NAB Expo

      April 18, 2014, 8:56 am
Finding the latest gadgetry and innovative technological advances at NAB Show is a great reason to converge with 98,000 or so of your closest friends and colleagues. Tech aside (and there was some COOL tech), social media has made a tremendous impact on the way we visit NAB - a subject that Walter Biscardi Jr. found intriguing.

      A TRIBUTE TO DEDE ALLEN

      April 18, 2014, 8:56 am
A tribute to Dede Allen, editor of such groundbreaking films as THE HUSTLER, BONNIE AND CLYDE and THE ADDAMS FAMILY, was long overdue. So on Saturday, April 5, the Motion Picture Editors Guild inaugurated its Dede Allen Seminar Room. The space is a perfect memorial for the late dean of New York editing, because she loved teaching her craft to others and she loved the guild. Local 700 president Allen Heim (ALL THAT JAZZ, VALMONT, AMERICAN HISTORY X) used a good old-fashioned splicer to cut the “ribbon,” a piece of 70mm. celluloid.

Why 'The Customer Is Always Right' Is Wrong

      April 18, 2014, 8:55 am
One woman who frequently flew on Southwest was constantly disappointed with every aspect of the company's operation. In fact, she became known as the "Pen Pal" because after every flight she wrote in with a complaint.

Breaking the Waves - Emotional Editing

      April 18, 2014, 8:55 am
Breaking the Waves is the kind of film that elicits strong emotional responses. And as its director Lars von Trier, editor Anders Refn, and location scout Anthony Dod Mantle discuss in this excerpt from our new edition’s scene-specific audio commentary, much of that power and the movie’s ragged, unnerving beauty have to do with its unconventional editing style, which stemmed from Refn and von Trier’s decision to “cut emotionally” rather than follow the usual rules of visual continuity.

      ...Not in Our Stars

      April 18, 2014, 8:52 am
A number of noteworthy events took place the week of April 6. Following the publication of former-President Jimmy Carter’s book A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power, current-President Barack Obama issued an executive order and a presidential memorandum to try to reduce inequality of pay between men and women. The annual equipment exhibition of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) opened, and at the show Atomos introduced its Ninja Star, probably the smallest, least-expensive professional high-definition video and audio recorder ever. Was there a connection?

At the NAB 2014 show in Las Vegas, Japanese public broadcaster NHK showed off massive 8K video displays and a giant 8K video camera, which the company is researching as the next logical step in the quest to crank out as much resolution as the human eye can possibly detect.
