Ever since entering the entertainment business as an adult (meaning after film school, because before, we had no idea what NAB was, nor had any money to make the trek to Vegas...), I've made an effort to see the show. Now, attending for my 15th year, I realize that the show itself is much like my experiences fishing with my dad. Early on, in both scenarios, it was a magical world.

HARTFORD, CT — Digital artists Lawrence Jones and Jason Vega have launched a new content creation studio, here, called Torque (www.torquevfx.com). The company specializes in the creation of visual effects, animation, motion graphics, and VR experiences for the commercial, entertainment, broadcast, cable and streaming television industries.

LOS ANGELES — The Visual Effects Society recently held its 14th Annual VES Awards, recognizing outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation in film, animation, television, commercials, video games and special venues. Comedian Patton Oswalt served as host to the more than 1,000 guests gathered at the Beverly Hilton to celebrate VFX talent in 23 awards categories.

BEVERLY HILLS — Mad Max: Fury Road (edited by Margaret Sixel) and The Big Short (edited by Hank Corwin, ACE) won Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) and Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) respectively at the 66th Annual ACE Eddie Awards. Day 2.5 of Sundance started off with a visit to the Condition One VR installation on Main Street. I was on my Martian VR Experience high from the night before and wanted to go to other cool places in the world (or, you know, out of this world...right?). Luckily, there's no shortage of VR experiences at Sundance this year, and C1's VR exhibit was conveniently located in the middle of town. LOS ANGELES — It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia returned to FXX in early January and Ring of Fire (www.ringoffire.com), here, helped take the gang to places they had never gone before for the show’s 11th season. From creating an 'attack bird' to taking out the opposing attorney in the Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Day Massacre trial, to exploding Danny Devito’s head in a drug induced haze, this season makes use of numerous visual effects.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — When many studios are limited to one facility and a small bank of computers, Australia’s Cutting Edge was sitting on a gold mine – two big VFX studios and all the hardware that came with them. Two times the resources doesn’t mean two times the efficiency, though, especially when your farms don’t talk to each other. To create that bridge, the team invested in PipelineFX’s Qube!, a render farm management tool tailored to the needs of big VFX projects.

LOS ANGELES — Whitehouse Post (www.whitehousepost.com) recently welcomed editor Chris Murphy to their Los Angeles office. He joins the studio having spent nearly a decade at Relish in his hometown of Toronto. During his time there, Murphy cut spots for Google, Bose, and Habitat for Humanity, and developed relationships with directors Miles Jay, Jon+Torey and Aircastle.
