Qube Cinema introduced the new Quad 3G interface for digital cinema projectors at NAB. The Quad 3G interface allows for integrated postproduction and digital cinema mastering workflows. Facilities can use one projector setup for both HD-4K uncompressed color grading and 2K-4K digital cinema playback providing a comprehensive review and quality control system.

Avid announced its support of the Sundance Institute's annual June Directors Lab, taking place in Utah. For more than 20 years, Avid has equipped this program with its flagship professional editing software, and in 2012, the eight selected projects and associated program participants will use Avid Media Composer 6 software, Nitris DX hardware and Avid ISIS 5000 shared storage to enhance and speed their creative process.

SIM Digital has acquired the finishing division of Master Key, a Los Angeles-based postproduction house. The acquisition comes on the heel of last week's announcement of the company's name change from Sim Video to SIM Digital.

The Hollywood Post Alliance has opened its call for entries for the HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Postproduction. Conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have taken a notable step forward in postproduction from a technical, creative or efficiency perspective, the award attracts thoughtful and forward-thinking submissions. A jury of peers and industry experts will judge the submissions.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the winners of the 39th Annual Student Academy Awards competition. Ten students from nine U.S. colleges and universities have been selected as U.S. winners along with three foreign student films, selected from 51 entries representing 29 countries.

The Hollywood Post Alliance announced the call for entries for the 2012 HPA Awards. The awards honor the individuals and companies engaged in noteworthy and groundbreaking work in postproduction. The gala award ceremony will take place on Nov. 1, 2012 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. This year's competition marks the seventh year of the HPA Awards.

"The IA," according to organizer Peter Marley, "has become more political than it has in the past." Marley was speaking over Mother's Day weekend on a podcast at the redoubtable FXGuide website, more or less officially announcing an initiative that broke last week via the arrival of a website: Namely that after years of talk on the subject, IATSE is openly recruiting visual effects workers to come join a union.
