Art of the Title: Smokin' Aces

High-contrast colors and a soulful beat instantly transport the viewer back to films of the ’60s and '70s to revisit the story they just experienced in this main-on-end title sequence. Hep assassins brandish guns and shoot pool, a cop takes a rending shot to the gut, and a femme fatale calmly looks down the sights of her iron: still images captured as if with a rostrum camera.

DJI Inspire 1 Raw FCP X Workflow

      August 25, 2016, 5:01 pm
Over here at Jamestown Films we’ve recently picked up a DJI Inspire 1 raw drone. Here’s a quick little workflow breakdown for you if you are thinking about getting one as well. The files are large and there is a workflow time cost involved so consider that before buying the raw model. The image is very nice though. Just watch out for low light exposure noise, it’s just a Micro 4/3 sensor after all.

      Peter Jackson's The Frighteners' VFX

      August 25, 2016, 5:01 pm
Just last month, The Frighteners celebrated its 20 year anniversary. While not a blockbuster success, the film cemented Peter Jackson’s directing chops even before he went on to make the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Frighteners, now instantly recognizable as a classic cult hit, also introduced many to the talents of Weta Ltd (as it was then known) and the studio’s practical and CG capabilities – until then, the abilities of Jackson’s New Zealand effects facilities had been relatively unknown.

      How Pixar Dominated The Summer

      August 25, 2016, 9:17 am
isney began this summer dominating the 2016 family film market in the US. Three of their releases — the animated feature Zootopia, the live-action kids’ movie The Jungle Book, and the slightly older-skewing superhero sequel Captain America: Civil War, which got the season started — joined the darker comic book flicks Deadpool and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in the ranks of the five highest-grossing pictures of the year (excluding Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is also Disney and opened in 2015 but was still in theaters through May). Those five are still among the year’s champs, but they’ve been joined by two more animated family films, Disney/Pixar’s Finding Dory and Universal/Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets.

Art is definitely up for individual interpretation, but there can be no doubt that comic artwork looks cool. There are hundreds of artists who are contributing to the comic landscape, helping build the storylines and character images that shape some of our media today. David Finch is no stranger to the field. With over 20+ years of experience doing projects like The New Avengers, Batman, and X-Men, he tackles the artwork for Wonder Woman with writer, and wife, Meredith Finch for DC’s The New 52 and Reborn series comics.

It isn’t that long ago that the visual effects and animation industries were concentrated mostly in Los Angeles. For lots of reasons (ask me again sometime) the work is now spread throughout the globe.

Are these the faces of the future of film scoring?

      August 24, 2016, 4:14 pm
Earlier this month, 12 young composers each got the chance to stand on the 20th Century Fox scoring stage, conducting a 65-piece orchestra playing their own music. It was the culmination of their participation in the ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop, a four-week immersion into the high-pressure, high-profile world of movie music.
