High-contrast colors and a soulful beat instantly transport the viewer back to films of the ’60s and '70s to revisit the story they just experienced in this main-on-end title sequence. Hep assassins brandish guns and shoot pool, a cop takes a rending shot to the gut, and a femme fatale calmly looks down the sights of her iron: still images captured as if with a rostrum camera.

The title of this series, “The Video Essay As Art,” isn’t meant to be facetious. I think that there really is room for artistry in the field of video essays. In my last piece I outlined a wide range of video essay categories, and the disparities between these videos suggests that the term “video essay” lacks a sense of cohesion. This is similar to a problem facing the video essay’s spiritual forebear, the essay film.

Claude Coats was one of the ace background painters on Disney features during Disney's first Golden Age (1937-1942) ... and on through to Lady and the Tramp in 1955, when Mr. Coats moved over to WED Enterprises to work full-tine on attractions for Disneyland park.
