    Color Correction Practice Game

I found a very cool little site that tests your ability to match a specific color based on hue, saturation and brightness. At first, I thought it was just kind of cute, but the more I played it, the more valuable I felt it was to improving your skills as a colorist.

      Z-Depth compositing with Particular - Part 1

      September 1, 2014, 5:11 am
Trapcode’s Particular is probably the most popular 3rd party plugin for After Effects, and amongst its many powerful features is the ability to read a z-depth map.  What it doesn’t have, however, is an obvious way to render out its own z-depth map - but by manually adjusting...

      August 29, 2014, 4:40 am
The new NT-USB from RØDE is a studio-grade digital microphone that officially works with Mac, Windows, and iPad. Unofficially, it also works with iPhone and iPod Touch. Ahead is my review, including exclusive comparative audio recordings with Chilean singer Bárbara Intriago.

A Bunch of Random Hard Drive Speed Tests

      August 28, 2014, 3:36 pm
As a freelance editor I get a lot of hard drives sent to me with footage to edit. Usually all of that media is transferred off of those hard drives and onto a RAID for editing. Occasionally I might have a quick turnaround or just fixes on a project and I’ll cut right off the hard drive sent to me. The faster the drive the better for both of these tasks. I’ve been keeping a running log of hard drive speeds for the last few months and with the help of Blackmagic’s Disk Speed test I offer...

      August 28, 2014, 4:35 am
SmartSound has made some great advancements in their software plug-ins for Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects since I did my last how-to tutorial two years ago and posted here on ProVideo Coalition. I just recreated two new short video tutorials and wanted to share them with you here, to show you just how easy this NEW round-trip method is to create/edit music soundtracks for your video/animation projects starting inside your video production apps.

Quicktip: Optical Kerning preference in After Effe

      August 28, 2014, 4:34 am
Optical kerning is a newer feature in Adobe apps. If you have a tendency to forget about kerning, be sure to enable Optical kerning, even it means occasionally overriding a font's built-in kern tables.

Nearly 50% of Video Professionals in UK Never Saw

      August 27, 2014, 4:13 pm
Surveys never give us the complete truth, no matter how unbiased they are, but they somehow help us to understand things better. So, when a recent survey in  the United Kingdom that targeted the opinions of 100 senior production staff in the area of video, revealed that nearly 50% of them have never seen 4K played out on any kind of screen, one has to ask if 4K is really the next big thing.

Subroles in Final Cut Pro X

      August 26, 2014, 9:52 am
There are no tracks in Final Cut Pro X. This fact really throws folks at first because it seems that tracks would be required for some very basic editing, compositing, organizing, and exporting functions. However, Final Cut's magnetic timeline, connected clips, and use of...
