Software That Says Come Play With Me

I had occasion to become familiar with Lightroom recently. A friend loaned me a Canon 5D and I wanted to look at the raw files I was making. Adobe is running a public beta for Lightroom 3 and I downloaded it. What a slick piece of work. The first time you use it, overlays appear above the interface explaining how it’s organized and giving you enough information to get started.

      Finally back to P2

      January 28, 2010, 8:20 am
After working with HDV for just over a year, I am finally working with Panasonic P2 again. I was finally able to convince my boss to shoot some recreations with the P2 Varicam. We were able to do this because his normal shooters were busy, and he wanted to see what all the hullabaloo was all about. Sure, we’d be mixing this footage with the bulk of a program that was shot on HDV, captured as ProRes, but because of the style of this recreation, it should stand out fine.

      Trailers: Trash or Treasure

      January 27, 2010, 8:20 am
As a digital editing systems trainer in the 90s and 00s, I enjoyed training and demoing for all types of editors. For a session, day, or week I got to inhabit their worlds and see firsthand their unique challenges, methods, and triumphs. None surprised me more than a veteran trailer editor. So this post and the next will be devoted to the joys of trailer editing and the works of the always uncredited trailer editors.

      Putting Images Together

      January 27, 2010, 8:18 am
The first reason for editing was longer films. The next idea was lets put these images together and tell a story. You’re a storyteller. It doesn’t matter if you are editing a news package, a documentary, a film or an online feature using stills, It’s all storytelling. Putting the images together to try and tell a story is editing. It’s the beginning of editing, it’s also the middle and the end of editing. Every edit should be made for the story.

Here’s a feature that’s been around forever, but many people don’t seem to be aware of it. Say you want to find a piece of data logged for a particular clip. You open the appropriate bin, but the column containing the info you’re interested in isn’t displayed...

      Why Most Workflows are Inefficient

      January 25, 2010, 8:16 am
Everyone always says "there’s a million ways to cut this" yet rarely ever sees examples of it. Well, you’re in for a treat, courtesy of the students of Bellevue College in Seattle, Washington. Their professor, Robert Backstrand, worked with us to build the entire curriculum of his editing classes around footage available at Editmentor.com. Here’s a sampling of Copier Wars edits from students who prove creativity is indeed alive and well.

In my experience few productions – be they film or television – are well planned from a workflow perspective. It seems that people do what’s apparently cheapest, or what they have done in the past. This is both dangerous – because the production workflow hasn’t been tested – and inefficient.
