    I'm Back!

    May 17, 2010, 4:32 pm
I’ve been a bit busy lately, both personally and professionally, which has resulted in a bit of time between posts. Personally, I moved (from Woodland Hills, in the San Fernando Valley, to Playa Vista, near Marina Del Rey) about 3 weeks ago. This represents a kind of homecoming for me, only a year after coming home from a few years in Florida, as I lived in the Marina on and off for almost 10 years.

The Man Who Created AVID – Part IV

      July 20, 2010, 10:17 am
Part 4 of my interview with Bill Warner. Bill explains how he quit his job at Apollo Computer to pursue his dream of building the AVID Media Composer. A remarkable study in entrepreneurship, he goes on to describe hiring his first engineer, Jeff Bedell, building more prototypes, arranging a demo suite at the NAB Show in April of 1987, and raising the venture capital to get to the next level.

      VHS of the Future

      July 19, 2010, 10:11 am
In discussion about the recent crop of HD DSLR cameras on RedUser the RED head honcho Jim Jannard famously said "1080P is the VHS of the Future" – implying that 1080P video wasn’t going to be good enough for cinema in the future, in fact barely good enough for home movies.

Avid Media Composer 5.0, one month later

      July 19, 2010, 10:09 am
Okay, let’s get one thing out of the way first: the new Drap and Drop timeline in Avid Media Composer 5.0 isn’t a direct rip-off of Final Cut Pro’s timeline. Nor will an FCP editor sit down in front of MC5 and instantly be able to rip into the timeline via mousing in the same way they do with FCP.

      USEFUL PDF's for POST!

      July 18, 2010, 11:47 am
I found a link via Twitter the other day that is worth sharing. It’s to a number of downloadable PDF files that were produced (and licensed under Creative Commons) by director/editor Zak Ray of Worldwide Studios. There’s quite the list and many of them might come in handy for the editors of the world.

2 of Digital Heaven’s useful tools move to 2.0

      July 17, 2010, 11:33 am
It’s probably been a busy week or two over in the UK for somebody as Digital Heaven, maker of useful tools for Final Cut Studio, has updated two of their products to version 2.0. If you’re a fan of BigTime or Loader (both for Final Cut Pro) then these updates might be for you.
