      Overwhelm: Quitting Before Getting Started

      May 5, 2020, 1:48 pm
Looking at other people’s work can be really inspiring. If you’re looking at it from a place of “Where I want to go” — rather than comparing yourself to everyone else — you’re going to be fine. If, however, you’re looking at everyone else and thinking, “Why aren’t I there?”, that could be a problem. We shouldn’t compare ourselves to everyone else. You don’t know what struggles they’ve had. You only see the end result but not what it took to get there.

      May 4, 2020, 4:50 pm
AVID has just released a new update for its popular editing software: AVID Media Composer 2020.4. This update finally transitions the software to 64-bit, which means it is now compatible with macOS Catalina and the latest Mac Pro. Also, Media Composer 2020.4 now supports ProRes for Windows users, while the new Universal Media Engine takes care of all the import/playback/editing/export tasks instead of Quicktime. Let’s take a closer look at it!

The true story behind 'Gladiator’s' prosthetic t

      May 4, 2020, 4:50 pm
Sometimes I think the most successful effects shots in films are where multiple techniques get used. That was the case with Gladiator’s famous tiger scene – the one where Maximus (Russell Crowe) engages with Tigris of Gaul, who brings with him a number of tigers.

Can the film industry handle a crisis like COVID-1

      May 4, 2020, 12:32 pm
With film production in Hollywood and around the world completely shut down due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and millions of dollars in boxoffice revenue lost as movie theaters have been globally shuttered for weeks, it’s fair to say that COVID-19 is an adversary the likes of which the motion picture business has never seen before.

      Yep, there’s FACS for dogs

      May 4, 2020, 12:32 pm
Previously, we looked at how DNEG built the CG dogs required for their Togo visual effects work. Now we dive into the many animation challenges the studio faced on the show. These challenges included close-up hero dog animation, as well as dealing with a pack of running, slipping and sliding sled-dogs – often harnessed together – that had to interact convincingly. Plus, the CG animation needed to match with the extensive live-action dog footage filmed in Alberta.

Strange Negotiations in SoundWorks Collection: Ex

      April 30, 2020, 1:42 pm
After renouncing his long-held Christian beliefs and walking away from his critically-acclaimed band, Pedro the Lion, musician David Bazan retreated into a solitary life of touring solo, struggling to rebuild his worldview and career from the ground-up, and to support his family of four. Strange Negotiations finds David a decade into his journey, during which he has become a sort of reluctant prophet to Americans reeling from their country’s own crisis of faith highlighted during the 2016 presidential election.

Combining Mixing and Editing Makes Sense

      April 30, 2020, 1:42 pm
Let’s get this out of the way: Great films tell stories with sound, but you’d never know it for the kind of credit accorded to the mixers and editors who create it. While cinematographers like “Roger” and “Chivo” have become rock-star mononymous with their images that people can see, aural peers like Gary Rydstrom, Ai-Ling Lee, Julian Slater, Skip Lievsay and Ren Klyce lack the same kind of recognition — even as their work plays a role that’s as great, if not greater.

The art of VFX for a comedy show

      April 30, 2020, 1:42 pm
While FuseFX visual effects supervisor Marshall Krasser was working on Upload, the Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation) comedy that just started streaming on Amazon Prime Video, he tackled an issue with a particular VFX scene and its place within the series, which is set in a future where people can be ‘uploaded’ to a digital afterlife.
