      Of the 250 top-grossing films in 2017, women comprised only 16% of all editors. That makes Debbie Berman, co-editor of Black Panther, a glowing exception. And not only has Berman had a successful career spanning work in her homeland of South Africa, Canada and now LA, she’s made a name for herself in the Marvel sphere. Last year, she co-edited Spider-Man: Homecoming, this year, the ground-breaking Black Panther alongside Michael Shawver (Fruitvale Station) and has the Brie Larson-led Captain Marvel out this year.

      Snubs And Surprises Loom Large at the Oscars

      As we continue to make sense of the Academy Award nominations that were announced yesterday, a few things are very clear. Chiefly, we saw that the new crop of voters, representing a more diverse background, spread the love out more than usual. We sort of expect that, but perhaps not to this extent. As such, there were a whole host of snubs and surprise inclusions about 24 hours ago. As we start to make sense of it all, we can begin by looking at what the actual snubs and surprises were. There were plenty, so there’s no shortage. I picked out six specific ones to look at, but the list easily could have been doubled. Hell, I didn’t even include Emily Blunt’s double snub…

      OLLYWOOD, EARTH 2 — The 2019 Oscar nominations were revealed on Tuesday morning, and for the first time in Academy Awards history that includes the controversial Popular Film category. When changes to the awards show were first announced in 2018 the initial response was critical, but now that the nominations have arrived this gambit seems to be paying off with a diverse group of movies sparking excitement for the 91st Academy Awards. After Lana Condor posted on Instagram about the nomination for her Netflix movie To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, the Academy’s Instagram account saw an influx of over one million new followers, most of them high school students.

      91st Academy Awards: Animated Feature, Short Film

      Each year, we greet the annual Oscar nomination reveal with excitement and perhaps just a touch of anxiety -- huddled around our computer screens, we hunker down to digest the list of nominees with cheers and the occasional furrowed brow, silently marveling at the depth of talent and scope of creativity demonstrated by the most recent crop of fantastic films and the creative professionals who made their production possible.

      Along with the likes of D. W. Griffith and Yasujirō Ozu, Soviet filmmaker and theorist Sergei Eisenstein was one of the most influential directors of cinema’s formative years. Often deemed the “Father of Montage,” Eisenstein’s filmography includes such influential works as Battleship Potemkin (1925), October: Ten Days That Shook the World (1928), and Alexander Nevsky (1938).
