How Martin Scorsese Perfected the Movie Soundtrack

      July 18, 2018, 6:59 am
While visuals remain the most dominant component of a movie, the best films deeply integrate aural techniques — dialogue, sound effects, scores, popular songs — to enrich a viewing experience. As a meticulously curated pool of well-known or obscure cuts, a film’s soundtrack can especially exert a potent effect on audiences: they can enhance a narrative, deepen our identification with characters, and plunge us further into an onscreen world. Our very own Christopher Campbell observes, “Great soundtracks can be an extension of, sometimes even an adaptation of, their respective movies. Listen to them after seeing a movie, and scenes are recalled through the songs they feature.” Indeed, music often dictates the emotions of the viewer, and an exemplary usage of music will prompt an abiding association between a song and its presence in the movie.

Why 8K won’t repeat the same mistakes as 4K

      July 18, 2018, 6:59 am
One of the things that the consumer electronics industry is historically very bad at is introducing new standards to the public. At one point, HD had well over 30 different flavours in use worldwide and plenty of TV sets sold as HD Ready (if you can remember that far back) turned out to be no such thing. And, to be honest, the introduction of 4K has hardly been much better, while even HDR is not the cut and dried, ‘this TV does HDR, this TV doesn’t’ case it should be either.

Houdini : vers un pipeline automatisé, de la phot

      July 16, 2018, 10:34 am
Luiz Kruel, Senior Technical Artist at Side Effects, presented at GDC 2018 a proposal for a conversion pipeline of 3D scans made by photogrammetry into video game assets. The idea: to replace the tedious steps listed in the image above, which often mix very different tools, by a pipeline centered on Houdini, by automating the work as much as possible.
