Last week at the Los Angeles Convention Center, SIGGRAPH L.A. 2012 once again brought together the worlds of art and science to show attendees the latest in computer graphics and interactive techniques. This convergence results in a nearly endless spectrum of artistic applications of science and scientific expressions and impressions of art.

Blackmagic Design will host the Blackmagic Roadshow in Los Angeles on May 16. To build support prior to an upcoming ratification vote, International president Matthew Loeb is trumpeting the virtues of the tentative deal recently reached between IATSE and the studios for a new three-year Basic Agreement that will go into effect Aug. 1 if approved.

It seemed like a good idea to sign off our NAB 2012 coverage with a mention of the big splash, a major new release, something exciting - but although the exhibition seemed refreshingly, almost comfortingly replete with new stuff, it's actually quite hard to pick out a shining example.

I hate to be one of those people who immediately leaps to discuss stereoscopic 3D first, especially as I'm not personally a huge fan of the technique, simply because it always makes my head hurt. That said, if NAB 2012 has a defining characteristic, it's the fact that tools for stereoscopic work both in production and post are starting to, well, not mature necessarily, but at least proliferate, which is probably a prerequisite for eventual maturity.

EditShare is previewing a new 64-bit version of Lightworks and a Linux version of the company's editing system at NAB. The company reported that it has had over a quarter of a million downloads since the Lightworks Beta program was announced, and the full Windows release of Lightworks will ship on May 28.

Nice Shoes has opened a new group of edit suites in its New York offices. The suites will run on the same technology and the same network as the rest of the studio's equipment, and will provide seamless transitions from the edit room to the studio's color, finishing, VFX and design capabilities. The studio will offer clients a choice between bringing their own staff editors onsite, or having Nice Shoes tap into its network of editors.
