Prepare for higher frames rates and higher resolutions with intoPIX new ULTRA-HD JPEG2000 codecs!
Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium – intoPIX, the leading provider of JPEG 2000 compression solutions, announces today the launch of a new generation of UHDTV codecs to answer the growing interest of the audiovisual industry for 4K and 8K resolutions.
The new ULTRAHDTV JPEG2000 codecs, called IPX-JPUHD, have been developed on the new generation of 28nm FPGA from Altera and Xilinx. With an optimized footprint, the codecs fit in a single and cost effective FPGA chip. The performances are very impressive achieving 60 frames per second with a respective maximum compression bitrate of 2Gbps for 4K and 8Gbps for 8K at a visually lossless quality. The new intoPIX 4K and 8K codecs are a real opportunity to adapt today’s industry to the new ULTRAHDTV standard and implement a complete production and high quality transmission chain.

The first product release is planned for Q4 2012. IntoPIX will be exhibiting at the IBC tradeshow in Amsterdam and will share more details about the targeted FPGA devices and release timeframe.
JPEG 2000 brings an impressive storehouse of valuable features to the audio-visual market, explaining its resounding success in the Broadcast industry. First, this intra-frame codec by its very nature closely matches the production process in which each frame of a video is treated as a single unit. Its ability to compress frames by frame has made this technology popular in the digital intermediate space in Hollywood. Next, JPEG 2000 is also of interest to those who want a lossless compression: the codec can be bit to bit reversible. Last but not least, the wavelet transform used in JPEG 2000 provides some unique features - such as the scalability - that are not available in any other compression method.
JPEG 2000 is an open standard that supports every resolution, color depth, number of components and frame rate.
