Top 5 Edited Disaster Wedding Ceremonies

    November 4, 2009, 12:03 pm
This weekend I’m getting married— so I thought it would be fitting to do a topic this week on wedding scenes. But not just any wedding scenes... wedding disaster scenes. Don’t get me wrong, I’m 110% sure that he’s the one I want to marry, and I’m pretty sure that there are no evil villains planning to kidnap me in the middle of the ceremony, but I figured I’d get all these situations out of the way vicariously through these films before my own wedding!

    Criteria
-Must be during a ceremony/just before
-Wedding must be a disaster for one or both of the main characters
-Editing must clearly tell story and reflect how the main character feels about this disaster

    5. Sweet Home Alabama (2002)

The editing is good in this wedding sequence— it’s very clean and you barely notice it. It also uses a very specific sequence of shot matching that moves closer and closer until it’s all close ups at the most emotional moment. The movie ends up being too cheesy and predictable to put higher on this list, but it’s worth mentioning especially because of the punch!

    4. Nunta Muta (2008)

This is a film that I need to pick up again once I can find some subtitles, but it just goes to show that the editor did a good job when the viewers can still understand the story and what’s going on without understanding what’s being said. Really the only issue is that the continuity is a bit off at some points and some of the cuts were a little too quick for my taste, but all in all this was a solid scene. The two things that sold me were two montages with two different purposes. The first was a great little energetic and culturally motivated preparation montage showing food preparation and dressing up, etc. and the other was a quick memory flashback that the bride has when the solider that crashes the wedding flashes his medal. Another thing I really liked was a subtle slow motion moment when the bride realizes that her wedding day is going to be interrupted. This sequence really gives you a sense of how the bride is feeling all the way through.

    3. Corpse Bride (2005)

Because this is an animation, the editing is arguably more planned out than it would be if there were multiple takes to choose from, which makes the sequence go pretty smoothly. But the story is very cleanly told through the images. The continuity is consistent, the composition in montage directs the eye in a logical manner, and it keeps a degree of suspense up by not revealing everything at once. My only complaint is that the cutting might’ve been too slow— the animation is so consistent and smooth that it feels slow already, and consequently using a slow cutting pace makes the scene move too slowly.

    2. The Graduate (1967)

This scene is interesting for so many reasons. First, it’s musically timed, but it’s not predictable. Second, it manages to use very long takes within this musical timing, forcing you to focus on everything going on in the scene from one perspective and soaking it up almost to the point of oversaturation. Finally, it’s almost all close ups— which brings you right into the characters and how they are feeling while this madness is going on around them. On top of all this the scene is basically told in real time, but it doesn’t feel slow at all.

    1. Spaceballs (1987)

This movie has TWO wedding disaster scenes! Both of which are edited with superb timing and solid shot matching. The choices of performance takes are good, too. Good comedy is a mix of timing and delivery and both of these scenes nail it. There are a few long takes in wide shot form, in the true Mel Brooks fashion, but they aren’t long enough to take the funny out of the moment.

    Krull

Why have I never heard of this film??? It’s a medieval sci fi movie that is too weird to not mention. It’s not particularly edited in a great way: there is almost no shot matching and the viewer’s eye is jumping all over the screen (there are lots of close ups involving the main female character but no one else... It jumps from CU her to medium hand or two shot or...), the editing doesn’t feel tight enough with extra half beats after takes, and there are some shot choices that are just confusing: what purpose does showing this serve? If you want a wedding disaster, then this is the movie for you, and I don’t mean that only in terms of the story!

As an interesting note, it was conveniently blocked by FOX just as the internet is on blackout strike today in solidarity against SOPA. American friends, please be aware that if SOPA passes, videos like this where I attempt to teach about film editing in a fun way will not be available anymore, even if I am in compliance with the Fair Use clause— in fact, I could be shut down, fined, and/or jailed without due process. If you like the internet and the ability to find information freely and easily, please educate yourself about this bill, and do whatever you can to stop it from passing!

Metropolis is one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, and it's obvious that the editing has a lot to do with it. The expressive nature of the acting is superbly juxtaposed with epically framed shots in such a way that story isn't only easy to follow, but really fun to watch!
