I've had a week and bit to digest this year's IBC and thought I'd reflect. T'was a funny conference. It was filled with a lot of the same tech that was announced/demoed at BVE, NAB and even IBC 2011, so there was a slight lack of new announcements. That said, there were a few interesting things that I will highlight.

LOS ANGELES — Twenty-six features have been submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 90th Academy Awards. Nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 23rd, and the 90th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 4th.

DALLAS — Lucky Post (www.lucky-post.com) has added senior Flame artist Dan Margules to its team. LONDON — Framestore reunited with Marvel Studios to deliver the climactic final act of Thor: Ragnarok, producing 459 shots of heavy-duty VFX and a host of fully-CG characters. The film was directed by New Zealand comic filmmaker Taika Waititi, whose credits include What We Do In The Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

NORTHAMPTON, UK — Edit8 (edit8.com) transcriber is a new app that uses Google Speech recognition to analyze and transcribe footage in a way that makes it accessible via Avid and Premiere. The tool basically creates clip markers, which make the whole process of finding the right sentence in hours of footage much easier, allowing editors to focus on building the story instead of wasting time looking for certain spoken sentences.

TOKYO — Wacom (www.wacom.com) has introducd the Wacom Pro Pen 3D, a new digital pen that is designed for use on the company’s MobileStudio Pro, Cintiq Pro or 2017 Intuos Pro pen tablet. The pen’s new third button provides additional control options for 3D programs and applications.

ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA — Rising Sun Pictures (rsp.com.au) created more than 170 final visual effects shots for Thor: Ragnarok¸ the new film from Marvel Studios.
