I've had a week and bit to digest this year's IBC and thought I'd reflect. T'was a funny conference. It was filled with a lot of the same tech that was announced/demoed at BVE, NAB and even IBC 2011, so there was a slight lack of new announcements. That said, there were a few interesting things that I will highlight.

SANTA MONICA — Luma Pictures (www.lumapictures.com), which created visual effects for the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, including the powerhouse villain Thanos, returned to work on the franchise’s follow up, creating VFX for the end tag of the film. The sequence features the entrancing Sovereign world, led by the ruthless high priestess Ayesha. The team created a stunning fully-CG environment, which included hundreds of animated humans in blue and luminous gold pods.

SAN FRANCISCO — Autodesk, Inc. (www.autodesk.com) has released SketchBook 4.0 for iOS, the latest update for its digital painting and drawing app. Now available for purchase through the Apple App Store, SketchBook 4.0 allows digital artists to leverage the full compute power of modern iOS devices, including GPU acceleration, with a revamped rendering engine. SketchBook 4.0 also features several new improvements that make a smoother, more convenient drawing experience.

LONDON — Codex, the maker of recorders and media processing systems that are designed to streamline the transfer of digital files and images from camera through to post production, has hired Mark Anderson as its new director of storage sales. He recently headed up market development for storage provider G-Technology, and has developed and maintained relationships with retail tech giants, such as Apple Retail and online stores for Symply and Promise Technology products.

LOS ANGELES — Deluxe’s Method Studios (www.methodstudios.com) served as a primary VFX vendor for Marvel’s new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 film, having completed work on more than 500 shots, including the final closeup on Rocket. Set to the backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, the film continues the adventures of Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket as they unravel the mystery of Peter’s true parentage.

As a feature film and TV editor, Hullfish’s credits include Courageous, War Room, Champion, The Reliant and the theatrically-released feature documentary, Clinton Inc. He also worked on The Oprah Winfrey Show for a decade.
