    HONOR THY EDITOR

    September 23, 2012, 3:53 pm
As part of their ongoing effort to gain recognition and acknowledgement for picture editors, the Motion Picture Editors Guild and the American Cinema Editors (ACE) launched a Petition for the Recognition of Editors in late June. The Committee for Creative Recognition, comprised of members from the Boards of Directors of both organizations, hopes to encourage film festivals and other organizations (both domestic and international) that present awards for achievement to honor the vital...

      Effects & Presets Panel

      January 6, 2019, 5:21 pm
A little over a year ago, we had the bright idea of re-releasing for free our After Effects online training that Lynda/LinkedIn Learning had dropped from their site because it was a few years old. As any user of Adobe software knows, even though new features get added all the time along the with occasional user interface refresh (usually making it progressively darker and darker), the core of the program remains essentially the same – so there’s still useful content in many of those old movies. We kept it up for a few months, but then got distracted by other projects.

Attend NAB for Free with BCPC... No Really!

      January 5, 2019, 2:28 pm
If you’ve followed me a while on the internets, you know that NAB Show (my first, in 2012, for which I wrote quite a recap) was a turning point in my career. I was able to get out of my bubble (Indiana), meet the people I knew only online or by reputation from books, and start to build a name for myself on a much larger stage. I learned a tremendous amount I put to use right away. But maybe most of all, my small-town mentality began to fade away and I could see myself in The Industry. Without attending, my career wouldn’t be where it is today.

“There’s always some new ground covered” when film editor Tom Cross works with director Damien Chazelle. “He likes to try new things,” Cross explains. So he knew that “First Man,” a biopic chronicling the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) and his historic moon landing, would be different from their previous collaborations. Watch our exclusive video interview with Cross above.

Editing A Quiet Place on Mute

      January 4, 2019, 6:48 am
In the year of populist Oscar contenders “A Star Is Born” and “Black Panther,” pundits and fans are not forgetting about John Krasinski’s horror smash hit “A Quiet Place.” The critical favorite is expected to make a showing in below-the-line sound categories, and Emily Blunt gained momentum for Best Supporting Actress after earning a SAG nomination. During a recent interview with The New York Times, Krasinski dropped a fascinating nugget of information about the making of the movie, mainly that he spent approximately five weeks editing the entire film on mute.
