  • Better editing with custom screen layouts

Better editing with custom screen layouts

    June 18, 2010, 12:49 pm
One of the handy features of modern NLEs is the ability to rearrange the interface around specific editing tasks. Changing the user interface windows for editing, mixing, color correction or effects will make easier work of any session. Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer and Apple Final Cut Pro are all designed with a similar bin, window and timeline layout that offers infinite possibilities to customize the UI, including keyboard and button commands.

Walter Murch and The Rule of Six

      December 4, 2018, 6:03 am
Over the years, I have blogged several times about Walter Murch (see links below) whose work as a sound designer and film editor is notable in such movies as Julia, Apocalypse Now, Ghost, The English Patient, and The Talented Mr. Ripley. In my view, Murch has written one of the best screenwriting books — “The Blink of an Eye” — only it’s not about screenwriting, but rather film editing. However since screenwriting is so much about scene construction, perspective, and transitions between scenes, I find Murch’s insights profoundly beneficial to our craft.

“Music is a part of life,” reveals “Black Panther” composer Ludwig Goransson in our exclusive webcam interview (watch the video above). “In our tradition you play music to perform,” he explains. “In Africa you play music as part of life. It’s tradition, it’s rituals, you play music to embody what you’re going through in life.”

Why Human Color Vision is So Odd

      December 3, 2018, 9:55 am
Most mammals rely on scent rather than sight. Look at a dog’s eyes, for example: they’re usually on the sides of its face, not close together and forward-facing like ours. Having eyes on the side is good for creating a broad field of vision, but bad for depth perception and accurately judging distances in front.
