For filmmakers, traveling can sometimes become a burden of B-roll overload. You want to be present and enjoy your trip, but also capture the shots you need for a dynamite edit. Personally, I’ve had my fair share of trigger-finger moments, where I’ve arrived at a stunning location and gone entirely overboard with capturing B-roll beauty of almost every single mountain, river, shrub, rock, and stick.

A short visual effects featurette has been released in conjunction with the impending arrival of Jordan Peele’s Us on DVD and Blu-ray, in which ILM VFX supe Grady Cofer discusses how the ‘twinning’ shots in the film were done (with stunt doubles, splitscreens, head replacements and face replacements). When editors take us into a story, they also choose which character will tell us the tale. Characters who’ve been victims of trauma, those who face mental-health issues and have to navigate surreal experiences still have to be engaging for the audience. It’s a difficult line to walk.
