It might surprise some to learn that the most important part of post-production for an independent film is the pre-production phase. Before shooting a single frame or pixel, the first decision any independent moviemaker should make is to scout an indie-friendly, post-production facility. Achieving success cannot occur without tediously planning for the end of the production. The more you use your mouse, the slower you work. Some tasks are impossible to do without a mouse, but maximizing keyboard shortcuts is the clear path to speed. Keyboard shortcuts, key remapping, and droplet creation are all designed to reduce the number of steps required to do something.

John Underkoffler is one of the great visionaries of UI design, and he’s just posted his talk about 3D spatial interfaces from the TED conference this year. This is the Minority Report UI (which he helped design) as it is being implemented — in reality — now. I had the great privilege of sitting in on his class at USC recently, where they were prototyping an editing application.

With any big software upgrade there’s going to be changes. Some visible, some not so visible. Personally, I love those changes ... as long as they add new or needed functionality without getting in the way.

SEATTLE - Automatic Duck (www.automaticduck.com) has released Pro Import AE 5.0 for the Mac, which was shown for the first time at NAB back in April. The release is a major upgrade to the company’s popular timeline translation tool for After Effects users, and now offers compatibility with Creative Suite 5 (CS5) from Adobe, which also launched at NAB.
