Editing the ACE nominated Molly's Game by Steve Hu

      January 17, 2018, 4:46 am
Aaron Sorkin has long been known for great writing and smart TV drama. On Molly’s Game, he steps into the role of writer/director and collaborated on the project with three editors: Elliot Graham, Alan Baumgarten, ACE and Josh Schaeffer. The film was recently nominated for an ACE Eddie Award for Best Edited Feature Film – Dramatic. For this interview, we talked to Baumgarten and Shaeffer. Baumgarten has edited since the early 1990s on TV series starting with Eerie, Indiana and on features: The Lawnmower Man, Meet the Fockers, The Heartbreak Kid, Zombieland, Joy, and American Hustle (for which he won an ACE EDDIE and was nominated for an Oscar). He also won an Emmy for his work on the series, Recount. Schaeffer has edited numerous features and TV series. He was an additional editor on Kong: Skull Island and is editing the upcoming Pacific Rim: Uprising. The other editor, Elliot Graham, had previously edited the film Steve Jobs, which Sorkin had written, and other films, like Milk, Superman Returns and was additional editor on X-Men 2 and Amazing Spider-man 2.

Tips on Recording Bomb Audio with a Handheld Recor

      January 17, 2018, 4:46 am
Capturing good audio is just as (if not more) important as capturing good images. Lavalier and shotgun mics are great options because they allow you to not only get close to the source of your audio but they are designed to stay out of or hidden inside the frame. However, if you don't have either of these types of mics (in which case, you should definitely think about investing in them), an inexpensive handheld recorder, like the Zoom H1 or H4n, works really well as long as you know how to position and conceal it in your scene. Here to give you some tips on how to do that is Darious Britt of D4Darious.

The Seamless Transitions in 'The Shape of Water'

      January 16, 2018, 2:05 pm
When a film has the remarkable story of love and humanity that The Shape of Water has, it’s hard to pay attention to the other cinematic elements that help bring it to life. Guillermo del Toro creates a wonderful world for the audience to float in with the beautiful look of the film and its endearing characters, but something else struck me when I saw The Shape of Water in theaters. I couldn’t put my finger on what made me so immersed in each scene, but then I realized it wasn’t the scenes themselves. It was the transitions between them that made this a moviegoing experience unlike any I have had before.

The Visual Effects Society has announced its nominations for the 16th Annual VES Awards, and Blade Runner 2049 and War for the Planet of the Apes unsurprisingly came out on top. The two films scored seven nominations each, Despicable Me 3 for some reason topped the animated feature nominees with five, and Game of Thrones leads the TV field with 11 nominations overall.

      RenderGarden accelerates After Effects renders

      January 16, 2018, 10:23 am
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: After Effects renders are slow. Complex shots progress sluggishly, so you open up Activity Monitor or Task Manager (ya nerd) and stare at CPU levels flying at half-mast. It makes the days longer and the deadlines tighter, and you just know there has to be another option.
