What is the 180° Rule, Anyway?

      January 11, 2021, 2:07 pm
It's the golden rule of film school and one of the most reliable tools in a cinematographer's toolkit. Here's how the 180-degree rule works.

      The VFX of 'Greyhound'

      January 11, 2021, 2:07 pm
What follows is a long chat I had with visual effects supervisor Nathan McGuinness and DNEG visual effects supervisor Pete Bebb about their work on Aaron Schneider’s Greyhound, which stars Tom Hanks as a WWII navy captain of a destroyer guarding a merchant ship convoy across the Atlantic during WWII.

Resolve Speed Editor, Pt 1 - Editing with the Spee

      January 11, 2021, 2:07 pm
Welcome to my review of the DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor. Hardware products designed to supplement and speed up video editing used to be quite rare. In the last few years, there have been quite a few to come along and I have reviewed many here on the Editblog.

'The Gift of Room Tone' featuring Martin Scorsese,

      January 11, 2021, 2:07 pm
"Capturing room tone requires [Criterion Collection] interview subjects to sit quietly for thirty to sixty seconds, and of course when you ask a bunch of people to do the exact same thing, they’ll all end up doing it differently. As you’ll see, some are very playful while others are more meditative; some close their eyes, and some look around the room or check their phones."

      iZotope RX 8 Advanced Review

      January 7, 2021, 2:27 pm
Izotope's RX series has been an essential part of our post production process for many years. Since RX 3 we've been de-crackling, de-noising, de-humming and de-reverbing our field interviews with this powerful tool. Every interview track gets an Izotope pass in post as part of our sweetening process to ensure we're releasing the best possible audio mix with all of our content.

Walter Murch and the Three Father's of Cinema

      January 7, 2021, 2:27 pm
I’ve mentioned before that one of the best books on screenwriting I’ve read is actually about editing: “In the Blink of an Eye”, written by the esteemed Walter Murch. Here is a nice video (18 minutes long), a PowerPoint presentation with Murch talking about the “three fathers of cinema”: Beethoven, Flaubert, Edison.

5 Questions Facing the Film Industry in 2021

      January 5, 2021, 1:57 pm
The movie business is ready to shake off 2020 and the world-shattering pandemic that fundamentally altered the way films are made, distributed and enjoyed. But before the box office can roar back to life, there are still major issues that Hollywood is grappling with, involving everything from cinemas’ red-ink-filled balance sheets to the evolution of studios’ comic book universes.
