    The New Offline!

    July 29, 2010, 9:43 am
Having edited professionally for more than a decade now, I have watched the editorial landscape change dramatically in terms of clients' expectations—especially in the realm of commercial editorial. I believe the demand for faster turnarounds and better-looking offline edits is directly related to how we perceive and embrace today's world of high-end desktop applications and high-tech devices. The assumption is, and it is a correct assumption, that since editorial tools (in my case Avid)...

The Myth of the Humanizing Woman

      January 12, 2018, 1:58 pm
I have mentioned one of my least favorite tropes—the Dead Wives Club/Avenge-the-Woman-Murderquest™—on several occasions over the past year or so, but I realized recently that I have never written an article for FSR fully dedicated to the subject.

How to Make Stop Motion Videos With Ease

      January 12, 2018, 1:58 pm
With today's photo and video tools at hand, and science in mind, filmmakers, and biologists Rob Nelson, and Jonas Stenstrom set out to teach us how to use our gear to their fullest potential. Every week, 52 Things (get it?), releases a video that aims to tell an engaging story that will not only entertain, but educate us on how to be better storytellers ourselves. I love this concept. It reminds me a little of Lee and Patrick's efforts to post 30 videos in 30 days (shameless self promo).

      COLOR

Color Grading With Aqua And Brown Made Easy In Pho

      January 12, 2018, 10:42 am
When it comes to things like quickly learning new Photoshop techniques, I am a straight to the point type of guy. I don't necessarily want to (though I certainly do on occasion, depending on the topic) watch an hour long videos explaining the minutiae of every click of the mouse. While I appreciate production values and the personality that can be on display in a video, sometimes all you need to know can be learned from text overlay and elevator music. That's what we have on deck today, enjoy.

How Do You Even Edit An Animated Movie?

      January 12, 2018, 10:42 am
The concept of editing a live action film is pretty easy to understand, right? There’s a whole bunch of footage that needs a whole lot of cutting to make the film work as a story. But how does editing work for an animated movie?

New to Pro Tools, Use the power of Session Templat

      January 12, 2018, 7:57 am
The way I like to start new Pro Tools Sessions are, from what I call, "blank canvases" - see images below. Pro Tools is second nature to me, I don't find it a problem starting any new production from these bare grey windows, however, those new to Pro Tools who just want to get a song started may find these empty Edit and Mix windows a bit off-putting.
