How Eisenstein filmed the Unfilmable through Monta

      January 23, 2018, 5:54 am
If you happened to look something up today, you might've noticed a familiar face on the Google Doodle. That's because January 22, 2018 marks what would've been the 120th birthday of Sergei Eisenstein, the Soviet filmmaking pioneer that helped usher in the modern age of movie making and film editing. If you're not well acquainted with the Latvian director, this video essay from One Hundred Years of Cinema will not only help you get up to speed on his many cinematic contributions but also explain what Soviet montage theory is and how it changed the way we make films today.

6 ways to get out of your creative rut

      January 23, 2018, 5:54 am
"You can find inspiration in anything," said Paul Smith. And he's right, of course. But how about we get specific, because whether you're in a creative rut, suffering from writer's block, or just not quite cracking that brief, sometimes you need to take direct action.

They offer something for everyone at the festival including several animated offerings. While the animated films were disappointing this year, it is still a rewarding experience to help support small animators and their unique films.

Mark Burnett and Nick Emerson on Editing Aubrey Pl

      January 20, 2018, 6:57 am
Writer/director Jim Hosking premiered his short Renegades at Sundance in 2010 and returned to the festival in 2016 with his debut feature The Greasy Strangler. His second feature, An Evening with Beverly Luff Lin, premieres in the NEXT program at Sundance 2018. Luff Lin unites Hosking with a cast of comedy luminaries: Aubrey Plaza, Jemaine Clement and Craig Robinson, among others. The film was edited by Mark Burnett, who also edited Greasy Strangler, and Nick Emerson (Lady Macbeth, Starred Up). Filmmaker spoke with the film’s editing team about the film’s tricky tone, which teeters between absurdist and romantic comedy, ahead of Luff Lin‘s premiere at Sundance.
