It is that time of year again, the Toronto International Film Festival is upon us. This also means its time for our annual TIFF Pub Night. The event is co-hosted with Gordon Burkell from Art of the Guillotine one of the largest post – production websites. Last year was a huge success as we had attendees from both the film and broadcast side, which included Producers and Editors from CTV, MTV, Teletoon, Chorus, Astral, Bell, as well as renowned film editor Michael Doherty. Learning the craft of editing is a real challenge with so many opportunities to look like a complete and utter noob. For those of us who have ever worked professionally as an editor, we can all collectively wince as we think back unfondly at the countless mistakes we made in our early days, but for those of you who are new to editing, well, you just get to learn from our green-eyed blunders.

While they have their own Oscar’s category and on occasion take over the iTunes’ charts, the musical accompaniment to our favorite films and TV shows often seem invisible. This is both a good and a bad thing. To not notice a song or a score in the background of a scene means that the perfect song has been chosen or the perfect score has been crafted and the sound work is smooth, but noticing the impact this sound design has on the story of the film or television show should be something we always try to do. Especially when considering it has such a strong role in guiding our emotions to where the storytellers intended them to go.

hen I featured Adam Tinius’ Pulp Fiction soundtrack essay, I noted that Shaun of the Dead has some of my all-time favorite needledrops and cheekily-named song selections. Turns out, Tinius has created the same kind of rapidfire sonic punchline collage with director Edgar Wright’s entire Cornetto Trilogy.

Jason Ballantine, ASE (Australian Screen Editors) has been in the film industry since 1992 and is currently living in Los Angeles. He has won and been nominated for several Australian Awards for The Great Gatsby, Wish You Were Here and Wolf Creek. He was also a part of the Oscar winning team for Mad Max: Fury Road.
