Top 5 Edited Predator Hunts

August 25, 2010, 2:43 pm
24 August 2010

There are many aliens out there that hunt humans, but the only one that seems to have shown any true mercy or feelings is the Predator. That said, they do make humans prey for sport, so I don’t really know how much credit I can actually give them...

Criteria:
- Predator hunting techniques exhibited
- Editing reflects the same precision than the Predator does ;)

5. Alien Vs. Predator Requiem (2007) Predator vs. Predatalien
Definitely not the shining film of the series (fortunately, not the worst of the series) but there were some very nicely edited sequences, most notably when the Preditor hunts the "Predatalien" (Preditor face/smarts + Alien body/acid blood = Prediatlien) nearest to the end before their final battle. The pacing is great and the montage stays true.

4. Predator 2 (1990) Subway hunt
Probably the goofiest of the series, the scene in which the editing stood out (or didn’t stand out, if you think about it) is down in the subway when 50% of the passengers hold out guns. The pacing is fantastic, and there is a creative use of the lights passing by the tunnel that create a strobe effect to enhance rhythm and tension. Oh, and seriously, why couldn’t they have ended the actual movie like this, instead!

3. Predators (2009)
Most of the "hunter" scenes aren’t cut to show as much "hunter" as I would’ve liked, but the montage is flawless throughout all the battles and the pacing of the movements in the frame during tense sequences have a particular flow to them that is very graceful. Out of all the movies, this is the one that I would have least liked to find myself in as a character...

2. Predator (1987) Mud-covered Ahhhnold
You know, I must have seen this movie about a thousand times since I was a kid, but I don’t think that I ever realised just how well it was edited until I paid attention to it this time around. The entire film is edited well, and it’s a classic-cheesy-manly-action film (which I’m a sucker for...), which makes it that much more awesome. In any case, the scene when Arnold just gets out of the water and is consequently covered in nice cool mud is a particularly well-edited scene in the film. The viewer gets a real sense that they are also being hunted, and that Predator, for some reason, isn’t seeing them. The scene is tense, has great montage and pacing, and is fun to watch.

1. Predator (1987) Hostage witnesses first kill
This scene is swiftly paced with smooth montage, and is creepy as hell. Up until now, we barely saw anything past a vague figure, paired with some infrared shots letting us know that our characters are being watched. During this scene, we’re still not sure what the threat is beyond a vague figure, leaving us even more tense.

So! I hope you enjoyed my relatively short post this week. I must confess that there is a slight agenda behind it, however. The Ever Awesome Gordon Burkell (who is the brains behind AotG) asked me to create something that showed off the awesome authority of us editors by way of the kickass alien design known as the Predator. Well, he and I have basically decided that we’re PREDITORS. Spread the word. ;)

As an interesting note, it was conveniently blocked by FOX just as the internet is on blackout strike today in solidarity against SOPA. American friends, please be aware that if SOPA passes, videos like this where I attempt to teach about film editing in a fun way will not be available anymore, even if I am in compliance with the Fair Use clause— in fact, I could be shut down, fined, and/or jailed without due process. If you like the internet and the ability to find information freely and easily, please educate yourself about this bill, and do whatever you can to stop it from passing!

Metropolis is one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, and it's obvious that the editing has a lot to do with it. The expressive nature of the acting is superbly juxtaposed with epically framed shots in such a way that story isn't only easy to follow, but really fun to watch!
