    LaCie’s CES 2013 lineup

    January 7, 2013, 9:14 am
LaCie is throwing down two more 5big drive enclosures for CES this week. Starting at $1,199.00, the Thunderbolt version boasts up to 20TB capacity and transfer rates that extend to 785MB/sec. Meanwhile, the much less expensive Gig Ethernet NAS version is aimed at small business and starts at just $549. Both look like stellar products, and we’re hoping to get some hands-on time later this week at CES.

Why Human Color Vision is So Odd

      December 3, 2018, 9:55 am
Most mammals rely on scent rather than sight. Look at a dog’s eyes, for example: they’re usually on the sides of its face, not close together and forward-facing like ours. Having eyes on the side is good for creating a broad field of vision, but bad for depth perception and accurately judging distances in front.

      SOUND

Composer Alexandre Desplat on his score for Isle o

      December 3, 2018, 9:55 am
Visually, the animated movie “Isle of Dogs” relies heavily on Japanese influences, but Alexandre Desplat had a very different idea when it came to film’s score. “What we decided on this one was to avoid, aside from the taiko drums, there’s no other folkloric instruments,” he tells us in a recent chat (watch the video above). He elaborates on the power that the taikos provide, saying they “are strong enough and they have such a range of sounds, frequency and dynamic that it can do a lot.” Desplat surrounded the taiko drums with instruments such as saxophones, recorders, French horns and the double bass in order to keep the rest of the score in our own contemporary world. “Even though it’s set in Japan, it keeps the world of music in our own.”

      EDITING

Premiere Vs. FCPX which was the Editor of 2018

      December 3, 2018, 9:55 am
Of the many video editing applications available on the market these days and besides the quickly advancing DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro CC and Final Cut Pro X are still dominating as a preferred go-to option in the world of creative professionals in 2018. With drastically different design philosophies, feature sets and performance numbers, however, video editors are still debating which one of the two NLEs is the better choice for tackling day-to-day video projects.

Mavropsaridis on Crafting a Different Kind of Peri

      December 3, 2018, 9:55 am
An 18th-century period piece in which the period gets redefined and transmuted throughout, Yorgos Lanthimos's The Favourite emphasizes the old adage, "kill them with kindness," at times almost literally. An anachronistic comedy in which backstabbing and political gain are all the fiery rage, the film gleefully features the dirtiest of words rolling off the cleanest of tongues.

Exploring Lalo Schifrin's Dirty Harry Titles

There’s a thrill that music in a film can give us that can make us forget our objections and concerns. When the right music is synced up to a well-edited sequence, we can be forgiven for being lost in the groove, as it were, even if we’re just watching a guy walking around a rooftop. As luck would have it, the person responsible for making a certain inspector off-the-charts cool has just been awarded an honorary Academy Award for his work in film music. His name: Lalo Schifrin.
