    BEVERLY HILLS - In early January, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the winners of the 2012 Scientific and Technical Achievement awards, which will be presented at the Beverly Hills Hotel on February 9. The nine awards, culled from over 70 submissions, include five software applications, one algorithm, one mechanical device, one computer controlled battery and an Oscar for Cook lenses.

      REEDSBURG, WI — At the IBC show in Amsterdam, Sound Devices (www.sounddevices.com) introduced its FileSafe technology as part of its 2.02 firmware release for its multi-drive, network connected video and audio rack-mounted recorders. Incorporated into the Video Devices Pix products, including the 270i, 260i and 250i, as well as the Sound Devices 970, FileSafe recovers video and audio files if, during recording, drives are unintentionally removed or power is lost.

      TIGARD, OR — LaCie (www.lacie.com) has introduced the third generation of its d2 storage product. The all-aluminum d2 Thunderbolt 2 is 10 percent smaller than its predecessor and has a capacity of up to 6TBs. The d2 Thunderbolt 2 is equipped with two Thunderbolt 2 ports as well as a USB3 port. LaCie plans on shipping the unit later this month, and will also offer a USB3-only version at a slightly lower cost in October.
