  • Educated Vs. Self Taught

    Educated Vs. Self Taught

    September 20, 2010, 9:30 pm
There appears to be a serious debate in the editing world, about the importance of education and assistant editors. It seems with the lowering price of computers, and easily obtainable editing programs such as Adobe’s Premier Pro and Apple’s Final Cut Pro, there are many editors that are now self taught. However, does this mean the lack of education and the lack of time spent assisting can hamper your ability as an editor?

The traditional method of becoming an editor was going to school and learning not only the technology but the craft; learning to build and tell a story in an engaging way. Then moving on to become either a trainee or an assistant editor. There you would learn from and editor, similar to other fields such as mechanics or engineers. Then after a few years maybe a producer or director would allow you edit their film.
The new method that seems to becoming very popular is simply buying a laptop and installing Final Cut Pro or Avid and teaching yourself the program through various tutorials found with the program or online. Once completed you would call yourself an editor and head out into the field.
    Educated Vs. Self Taught
    Educated Vs. Self Taught
Now their are advantages and disadvantages to both scenarios. Let’s talk about the advantage of being self taught. Initially you seem to be qualified as an editor and can demand top dollar immediately. If you are lucky enough you land a gig cutting somewhere maybe on a doc.
The disadvantage will become clear very quickly, that without the education you have not learned the craft of cutting. The ability to build a scene with various actor performances and responses and tell a story. Then the lack of experience with various formats and technology will begin to show when working on dailies. The ability to trouble shoot various issues in the edit suite only come with experience. Now I know you are thinking that’s an advantage when you are self taught... Not really because as you are busy teaching yourself, you are actually wasting the Studio’s time and money, and that does not bode well for you.
Looking at the traditional method you can clearly see the advantages. Not only have you spent the time with learning the craft, learning to select performances and telling a great story, assisting has opened a few doors, than beating on the pavement could not. Plus, you are more likely to be accepted into various prestigious organizations such as the DGC ( Directors Guild of Canada), the CCE ( Canadian Cinema Editors ) and ACE (American Cinema Editors).
    Educated Vs. Self Taught
It seems the only real disadvantage is time spent, taking years longer to get to the stature of being a full time editor, instead of a few months.
    Educated Vs. Self Taught
Now before I get inundated with emails. I am not saying you can’t make it as a completely self taught editor. The point I am trying to make is that being self -taught can be very limiting to your skills. Studios, as well as producers often do not have the time nor the patient for an uneducated , and inexperienced editor. In order to unleash and harness your abilities as an editor you need to get a good grasp on the craft, as well as the technology.

      Caldigit VR 6TB Review

      September 18, 2011, 9:45 am
Recently I had a great discussion with the Twitter community about picking up a new raid for myself as my older ones were now aging, and I was running out of space. Many people suggested a Thunderbolt drive. However Macbook Pro is only a year old and does not support Thunderbolt, and Apple has yet to release a new MacPro Tower. Thus I really did not see the need for a Thunderbolt drive yet. Enter The CalDigit VR.
