Anne V. Coates has edited 48 films in as many years. Her first love was horses; as a girl, she thought she'd be a race-horse trainer. In his 19 years as a television picture editor, Ron Volk, A.C.E. has become a bit of an expert on Grammer—Kelsey Grammer, that is. Five years after completing the last of 129 episodes of Frazier, Volk has re-teamed with Grammer on Hank, a new sitcom from ABC that premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Building a new facility coincided beautifully with the producers’ other interest: switching from standard definition to high definition, and from tape to tapeless. That path soon became a journey with a bump in the road and a happy destination.

Lock up your sons! Cougar Town, starring Courtney Cox, premieres September 23 on the ABC network. Inspired by executive producer Bill Lawrence’s wife Christa Miller, who’s older than he is, the series is about a mid-40s woman with, well, let’s say, "relationship issues." Lawrence also executive produces Scrubs, so both shows are shot and edited at Culver City Studios.

John Gilroy, A.C.E., will be honored by the Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television (SFTV) with its Distinguished Editing Award on October 1.
