What should Apple do with Final Cut Pro?

    September 28, 2010, 9:02 am
Writing applications is in some ways similar to building a house. There’s usually an initial plan, often with stages to be added in future releases planned from the start. (I once asked a Digital Production BuZZ guest, around the time of FCP 4.5, if everything from their original wish list was in Final Cut Pro: response, nowhere near all!) However, over time, additions get added on; another "room" here, another one there.

Stop-Motion Icon Will Vinton Passes Away at 70

      October 5, 2018, 6:11 am
Stop-motion legend Will Vinton has passed away at the age of 70. His family announced his death in a Facebook post Thursday afternoon. They said he battled multiple myeloma, a cancer in white blood cells, for 12 years. “We grieve heavily as our dad leaves a hole in our lives that will be impossible to fill,” they wrote in the post. “His wishes were for us to continue the projects he had started; we will try our best to do so.”

5 Reasons to NOT fix it in post

      October 5, 2018, 6:11 am
There are so many powerful post-production tools out there that basically perform magic. They can add incredible effects and fix horrible mistakes with but a click of a button, so why do experienced filmmakers always tell up-and-comers not to "fix it in post?" Even though there are some cinematic blunders that can be corrected with the help of a beefy editing program, the vast majority of them are going to require a reshoot rather than a retouch. In this video from Aputure, Benny from the A-Team goes over five situations in which you might want to avoid "fixing it in post" because it just plain won't work.

Avid Let It Slip That Pro Tools 2018.10 Is Coming

      October 5, 2018, 6:11 am
It would appear as if Avid are planning a Pro Tools 2018.10 release sometime in October. Community member Victor spotted it in an Avid pdf and we have tracked it down to the What’s New in VENUE_6.0 pdf.

Navigating Crazy Rich Asian's World as an Editor

      October 4, 2018, 9:05 am
Crazy Rich Asians hinges on dynamics. The complicated web of relationships will either catch true love or tangle the unsuspecting couple. Rachel (Constance Wu) gets off to a rocky start with her boyfriend’s mother (Michelle Yeoh), but there are even more delicate power struggles within the family. In the elite Singapore circles of Crazy Rich Asians, a look, a gesture, or even a flower can be a symbol of judgment. What someone says isn’t always what they mean. To understand the undertones of each scene, we are reliant on editor Myron Kerstein to give us the clues we need.

Switching to Windows: the hidden cost by Damian Al

      October 4, 2018, 9:05 am
As with many folk in the film industry, the absence of Nvidia options from Apple’s line of laptops forced me to look at Windows offerings. A not inconsiderable amount of research led me to the conclusion that Alienware would be the best match in terms of power (quad-core top-of-the-line Intel CPU, and full GTX 1080 graphics card). And I have to say I loved it…when it worked. And that, dear friends, is the beginning of our cautionary tale.

      AJA FS-HDR for DP's and DIT's

      October 3, 2018, 12:36 pm
When it comes to cinema production, there are a number of demands that suggest the ability to correctly monitor HDR on set or location would be of great benefit for production teams. About two years ago, there was discussion at an event at the Dolby Theatre in London about Netflix productions using HDR for much of their delivery. In talking to production teams, we heard that they were struggling a bit on-set. One reason was that they couldn’t view HDR with the standard monitoring systems they had. And, they couldn’t clearly see how much detail was actually coming out in the background of scenes as they were working with SDR displays.

This is Allan McKay. Welcome to Episode 160! This is going to be a bit of different Episode. One of the key things I’ve gotten hundreds of emails about are from people who are not in a creative industry — but who want to pursue their dream of being an artist: Having their creative outlet not just be a hobby but their career!
