      CARRY ON, NURSE

      June 16, 2010, 11:49 am
Showtime’s Nurse Jackie just had its second season finale, but with the cable network’s announcement that the popular show will return for a third season next year, fans of the dark, half-hour comedy series about a flawed emergency room nurse at All Saints' Hospital in New York City will have something to look forward to. In the meantime, Gary Levy and Anne McCabe, the two picture editors, and Steve Borne, the supervising sound editor, talk about their work on the just-concluded second season.

      Avid Edit Anywhere, On Anything

Over 20 years ago Avid began with a shift away from linear purpose-built hardware by harnessing the power of non-linear software, running (eventually, as they increased in power) on commodity workstations. Today, the network--extending beyond the local network to the internet--is the platform ready to be harnessed.

Editing "in the cloud" (i.e. with media and power remotely on the Internet) is hotting up. Google has just released a new tool for YouTube http://bit.ly/cahd27 while Avid have been previewing their cloud-based editing application. http://bit.ly/bnNPUQ Still, uploading media seems to be the sticking point for any serious amount of editing.

YouTube has a new video editor that lets you create videos using excerpts from the videos you've already uploaded. You can also add a music file from the AudioSwap library, but YouTube mentions that it might display ads if you use some of the audio files.

The more I thought about professional practices, the more I realized I had other questions to address first. Editmentor serves lots of different people with varying levels of experience, and we’ve had a number of questions from people asking "How can I become a professional editor?" And, in a world where literally anyone can assemble clips of video and audio on their own computer, what makes a professional editor professional?

The new AMA functionality in Avid Media Composer 5 makes working with Canon DSLR footage a lot easier, but at some point it’s probably going to become necessary to transcode it to another format, so which resolution is best?
