    A Gift For Editors

    December 25, 2010, 8:26 am
Ken Sallows, A.S.E., the great Australian film editor, sent the original opening to In the Blink of an Eye. Here's the story behind it and the pdf.

The story is that without Ken Sallows, A.S.E., there would be no In The Blink of an Eye book by Walter Murch. It's that simple, at least at first glance. It wasn't until I talked to Ken that I heard the full story.
Walter Murch gave a lecture in Australia in 1988 and Ken who was a big fan of his work, couldn't make it. He had heard there was a recording and so he tracked it down and listened to it. He felt the need to get this document out to everyone and began the arduous task of transcribing it.
Once the book was transcribed he tracked down Walter Murch and faxed him the entire document and suggested it be turned into a book. Murch made a few changes and faxed it back to him.
Ken spent the next year searching for a publisher to put this document into book form and eventually found the Australian Film Institute was willing to put it out.

In the original printing Ken was asked to write the forward/introduction. The book became an instant hit in Australia and immediately had the eyes of North American publishers.
When the book was republished for the rest of the world Ken's introduction was removed and since the distribution of the newly published version made it to Australia, AFI stopped printing their version with Ken's introduction.
It seemed as though the unsung hero of the book was lost, until now, here's Ken Sallow's original Introduction.

Woke up and my producer came out wearing a shirt that read: "But what I really want to do is direct", couldn't help but laugh out loud.

Lauren Woodcock (Cutting Room Producer) and I (Gordon Burkell) have landed and we're now trying to find food. The trip was much shorter than the six hours we were told. Mark Livolsi might not be able to be interviewed tomorrow due to a screening. Here's hoping his screening goes well. It's 3:37AM in Toronto and 12:37AM here in LA. Time to find some food and get ready for tomorrow.

      Final Day at Edit Fest

      June 15, 2009, 2:03 pm
So here I am on the bus heading back to Toronto and I have twelve hours to spare so I should recap what happened on Saturday. Unfortunately, Thelma Schoonmaker didn’t make it to the panel, which upset a lot of people. However, the ACE handled this well, they had everyone stay at the end of the day for Pizza and Beer. This gave the students and assistants there a chance to mingle and get their name out.

      M. Berenbaum and the First Talk

      June 12, 2009, 1:59 pm
I met with Michael Berenbaum today at 3PM. The talk went great! He's very engaging and open! I met him at 3PM and then found that the DGA didn't have WIFI. So, I went looking for a Starbucks (for WIFI). The one time... The one time I need a Starbucks I can't find one. When I do find one, they have a very different approach to allowing their US customers use the WIFI. I would have to pre-sign up online????? Anyways, you'll hear the interview soon.

      We've Arrived!

      June 11, 2009, 1:58 pm
After twelve hours on a bus we've arrived in New York for Edit Fest. It was quite the ride, it all started when we got into Buffalo and I was pulled off the bus! They accused me of not having a ticket. The problem stemmed from the fact that Canada and the US weren't discussing the new ticket structure Greyhound Canada has implemented. After that every stop we made someone would come on board and talk to me about this ticket. No one, I repeat, no one, not even the other passengers had this ticket! Calls were made, tickets negotiated etc.
