Wireless SATA interface aims to topple USB

    January 6, 2011, 9:29 am
USB has become the I/O method of choice for most users, thanks to the many creative ways it has been adapted (and it has become a terrifying security risk for network managers thanks to the creative way it has been used in threats like the Stuxnet worm). At CES the USB-IF organisation will demo an incredibly large number of new manufacturers who have rolled out SuperSpeed USB applications and devices since the specification was launched about a year ago at the 2010 CES. SuperSpeed USB.

Switching to Windows: the hidden cost by Damian Al

      October 4, 2018, 9:05 am
As with many folk in the film industry, the absence of Nvidia options from Apple’s line of laptops forced me to look at Windows offerings. A not inconsiderable amount of research led me to the conclusion that Alienware would be the best match in terms of power (quad-core top-of-the-line Intel CPU, and full GTX 1080 graphics card). And I have to say I loved it…when it worked. And that, dear friends, is the beginning of our cautionary tale.

      AJA FS-HDR for DP's and DIT's

      October 3, 2018, 12:36 pm
When it comes to cinema production, there are a number of demands that suggest the ability to correctly monitor HDR on set or location would be of great benefit for production teams. About two years ago, there was discussion at an event at the Dolby Theatre in London about Netflix productions using HDR for much of their delivery. In talking to production teams, we heard that they were struggling a bit on-set. One reason was that they couldn’t view HDR with the standard monitoring systems they had. And, they couldn’t clearly see how much detail was actually coming out in the background of scenes as they were working with SDR displays.

      Designing the Creatures of Solo

      October 3, 2018, 6:22 am
We all know the trivia. The Millennium Falcon is the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. The hunk of junk on first sight may not have impressed Luke Skywalker, but that bit of bluster achieved boyish respect for the smug pirate behind the wheel. Although, what the hell does that actually mean? Isn’t a parsec a measure of distance and not time? How can you travel A to B in a shorter amount of space? New York and California don’t get closer or farther apart from each other.
