Best Edited Scenes in a Tron Movie

    January 12, 2011, 1:49 pm
When I was little I remembered Tron as being the coolest thing ever, especially since I was definitely a little geek at the time. On the surface it’s a bunch of cool special effects with a fun story, but when delved into a little deeper I’ve noticed that there is a lot of attention paid to the craft of filmmaking. This is especially true with the editing. The new Tron, upholds a couple of those attentions, but to a lesser extent.

    5. Tron (1982) Break in

This scene isn’t so much action oriented, but it is artfully put together. It’s one of the best examples of a running theme throughout the entire film that isn’t really obvious unless you’re like me and see how shapes interact with each other everywhere (I don’t just do that with movies or editing... I see shapes interact in every day life, too). But as our heroes are sneaking through the building in preparation to hack the main computer, the pictures cut together are mostly medium-wide to wide angles. What’s special, however, is that each shot is composed specifically to have a plethora of hard lines, resembling a grid (or a computer motherboard?). Cubicles, grates, the city lights though the window in the background of the main office— these shots only work together without clashing thanks to proper timing and well thought out placement in editing.
    4. Tron (2010) Light cycle battle

This light cycle battle is definitely more complex than the 1982 version. I can only imagine that it was a nightmare to edit, especially before the effects got rendered. The pacing here is what really makes it exciting, as the shape montage is a little all over the place. With that, however, comes just the right amount of unease that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
    3. Tron (2010) Flynn and Tron fight

This is the scene that stuck out to me the most in this film— fight scenes are always great to analyze, but this one is special because it manages to take the visual "grid" lines in the environment into account in the same form as the original 1982 film did. This, paired with a great action pace makes for a great fight scene.
    2. Tron (1982) Destroy Master Control

This scene not only includes an epic fight, but we almost start feeling sad for the master control as he becomes desperate to save himself from destruction. This is exceptionally weird because we’re looking at something that isn’t supposed to be human by any stretch of the word. We feel this way because of the pacing— Tron is trying to break the barriers that the MCP puts up to protect itself, and all the while tries to put his power into an almost non-functioning Sark. In this almost primitive 3D world we find ourselves feeling sorry for the most non-human character in the film.
    1. Tron (1982) Jeff Bridges gets Digitized

This scene STILL gets me excited even with the outdated special effects. My only real guess to the reason why that might be (besides the fact that it was really well done, even by today’s standards), is the editing. The visual "grid" theme is further expanded by odd camera angles and lines, which integrate you into the digital world right along with the main character Flynn.

As an interesting note, it was conveniently blocked by FOX just as the internet is on blackout strike today in solidarity against SOPA. American friends, please be aware that if SOPA passes, videos like this where I attempt to teach about film editing in a fun way will not be available anymore, even if I am in compliance with the Fair Use clause— in fact, I could be shut down, fined, and/or jailed without due process. If you like the internet and the ability to find information freely and easily, please educate yourself about this bill, and do whatever you can to stop it from passing!

Metropolis is one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, and it's obvious that the editing has a lot to do with it. The expressive nature of the acting is superbly juxtaposed with epically framed shots in such a way that story isn't only easy to follow, but really fun to watch!
