“War for the Planet of the Apes” from Weta Digital could well be on its way to the elusive VFX Oscar after winning four VES trophies Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton (including the top feature prize). Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” won for supporting VFX, Pixar’s “Coco” earned four awards (including VFX for animation), and “Game of Thrones” took home five awards (including VFX for TV).

'Blade Runner 2049' sound mixers Doug Hemphill, Ron Bartlett chat with Gold Derby's Zach Laws: 'Blade Runner was in our DNA.' They previously collaborated with Ridley Scott on the 2007 final-cut version of the 1982 sci-fi classic, re-mixing the film with all the new bells and whistles available to them. When they lent their talents to Denis Villeneuve's 2017 followup they reaped an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Mixing.

Visual Effects Society Awards Highlight Realism

      February 13, 2018, 1:18 pm
Nominations by the Visual Effects Society often provide signposts indicating significant directions in the vfx field, and that’s true again this year. The films honored for overall effects in photoreal features are the same five that earned vfx Oscar noms: “Blade Runner 2049,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “War for the Planet of the Apes” (pictured above).

      VFX Breakdown of Kong-Skull Island

      February 13, 2018, 6:20 am
This is Allan McKay. Welcome to Episode 127! I’m speaking with Kat Evans about Women in the Industry. I think this one will be really cool and has been requested in the past. Oddly enough, for 2 or 3 years, I’ve wanted to talk to Kat on the Podcast. She has worked in the industry for over a decade, for several studios and shops like ILM, Giant Killer Robots and others. She is married to Neil Blevins who is also in the industry which I thought would be interesting to talk about as well.

      Reversing Sunset to make Sunrise

      February 13, 2018, 6:19 am
This is the first of our reader QuickTips which comes to us courtesy of Clark Morris, Senior Editor of 30 Second Street. I have to honestly say that I have never thought of the left to right, right to left direction of a sunrise or sunset when I have quickly hit the reverse button in my NLE to turn that sunrise to a sunset, or vice versa. But I’ll take Clark’s word for it and heed this advice the next time. Take it away Clark!
