    BlackMagic Design

    January 24, 2011, 8:54 am
This past week Gordon and I were invited to sit down with one of leading post production manufactures in the industry, Black Magic Design. Together we discussed Black Magic Design’s approach to post production and their competitors, and here is their response.

Black Magic Design has a hands-on approach, ideas created by users whom are editors themselves. The goal was to provide great quality, at a low price. They stated that they are able to test their products rigorously within their own post house in Singapore. They wanted to either fill a need, or be better than their competitors at a reasonable price.
BlackMagic Design is leading the way for 3D workflows in post. With the DecLink HD Extreme 3D card, they have the first full 3D capable card that supports stereoscopic work in addition to supporting HDMI 1.4. DeckLink HD Extreme 3D switches between SD and HD, and has built in 3 Gb/s SDI, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 RGB, native 12 bit and frame rates right up to 1080p60. The card also allows the full resolution of a 30 inch display to be used for native play back of 2K feature film resolution, so you see pixel for pixel feature film resolution.
    BlackMagic Design
Packaged with the DeckLink HD card comes, Media Express application that lets you capture and play clips, with decks via RS-422. Just enter IN and OUT timecode points and select Get Clip, or Put Clip, and your clip will be transferred between DeckLink and your broadcast deck. This is a free application that comes bundled with card.
BlackMagic has married together with many different NLE’s to bring support on a large selection of codecs from 3D, Stereoscopic, RED, Uncompressed and even BlackMAgic’s codecs. They take this even further by being able to pull codecs from either Final Cut Pro or Premier Pro, giving to the ability to use Apple Pro Res 4:4:4. This is because DeckLink is a 4:4:4 12 bit card.
Although BlackMagic currently does not support Avid, BlackMagic is open to work with anyone. "We have a developer's kit available to download, allowing any NLE Manufacture to easily integrate BlackMagic into their systems, this includes Avid." The goal is support all NLE’s giving our customers the widest selection.
Resolve, over the past 15-20 years, has archived real time capabilities, with real time based color grading, at full resolution. Resolve is also fully capable of supporting mixed formats, whether its resolutions, frame rates, or scaling. It is a full real time processor, leaving no render times. No wants to render to see the final color grade. Editors do not want to lower resolutions and work with proxies just to color grade. Editors want full resolution, and to be able to see their changes immediately. Resolve really stands out from it’s competitors as it has a 3D tracker, and a Da Vinci control surface.
    BlackMagic Design
Black Magic’s Intensity Shuttle allows you to go into the field with the power of USB 3.0. Intensity Shuttle, is the world’s first 10 bit HD/SD editing solution for USB 3.0 on Windows machine. Apple has yet to support USB 3.0, however Black Magic assured us they are confident Apple will soon. The connections available are HDMI 1.3, Component, S-video, RCA, and PCI Express.
    BlackMagic Design
The H.264 Pro Recorder is a square USB 2.0 capture device. This device does real time SD and HD compressing to a Quicktime h.264 VBR ( variable bit rate ) for the web, dvd, iPhone, YouTube and more. H.264 Pro Recorder allows you to select between SDI, HDMI and analog component video inputs with selection between inputs. You can select to take audio from the SDI, HDMI or stereo balanced analog audio input jacks. H.264 can be connected directly to HD or SD video sources because the SDI, HDMI and analog component inputs all switch between formats. This means you can capture from HDCAM, Digital Betacam, Betacam SP, DVD players and more. This gives you the ability to preserve Archive footage from tape.

We would like to thank BlackMagic Design for taking the time to discuss with us some of their cutting edge gear, and we look forward to seeing them at NAB this year.

      Caldigit VR 6TB Review

      September 18, 2011, 9:45 am
Recently I had a great discussion with the Twitter community about picking up a new raid for myself as my older ones were now aging, and I was running out of space. Many people suggested a Thunderbolt drive. However Macbook Pro is only a year old and does not support Thunderbolt, and Apple has yet to release a new MacPro Tower. Thus I really did not see the need for a Thunderbolt drive yet. Enter The CalDigit VR.
