      SOUND

Combining Mixing and Editing Makes Sense

      April 30, 2020, 1:42 pm
Let’s get this out of the way: Great films tell stories with sound, but you’d never know it for the kind of credit accorded to the mixers and editors who create it. While cinematographers like “Roger” and “Chivo” have become rock-star mononymous with their images that people can see, aural peers like Gary Rydstrom, Ai-Ling Lee, Julian Slater, Skip Lievsay and Ren Klyce lack the same kind of recognition — even as their work plays a role that’s as great, if not greater.

The art of VFX for a comedy show

      April 30, 2020, 1:42 pm
While FuseFX visual effects supervisor Marshall Krasser was working on Upload, the Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation) comedy that just started streaming on Amazon Prime Video, he tackled an issue with a particular VFX scene and its place within the series, which is set in a future where people can be ‘uploaded’ to a digital afterlife.

      April 30, 2020, 1:41 pm
As we continue our social distancing coverage of things that would have been introduced at NAB 2020 I sat down with Michael Krulik from Avid Technologies and he walked us through this deep dive of the brand new Avid Media Composer 2020.4. We got a great look at the new update in a recent Let’s Edit With Media Composer – What’s New In Media Composer 2020.4 here on PVC.

Blackmagic answers 5 key questions re: Teranex Min

      April 30, 2020, 1:41 pm
Blackmagic’s Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR is now shipping and —fortunately— it includes two key functions I had suggested a year ago at NAB 2019. The new Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR accepts an SDI and delivers it to a monitor with DisplayPort input (including the Apple Pro Display XDR I’ve covered before). The Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI HDR does the same with an HDMI monitor or even a consumer TV set. Ahead I’ll share the five questions I asked, Blackmagic’s responses and my conclusions. After that, I’ll share the official press release.

      Remote Editing, Part 4

      April 29, 2020, 7:26 pm
I wrote about getting the right connections for remote editing. I talked about encoding so I could stream my session live. Last time, I examined the whole concept of latency—how delayed the stream would be when it arrived at a client’s location.

      Editing 1917

      April 29, 2020, 1:03 pm
In just a couple of weeks, 1917 will debut on the home formats and we’ll all be able to marvel in its excellence once again. Until then, here’s a cool little video hat I stumbled across on YouTube that goes into the editing of Sam Mendes’ celebrated WWI epic.
